Everett, WA - Eight-time MLB All-Star and Seattle Mariner, Robinson Canó played first base for the Everett AquaSox Thursday, as they began a five-game homestand against the Eugene Emeralds. The AquaSox had three home runs in the second inning but they could not out muscle the Emeralds as they lost 10-6. Canó went three-for-four in his first rehab game with AquaSox.
After a scoreless first inning, Eugene's Nelson Velazquez hit his seventh home run of the year over the Chick-Fil-A Lynwood sign in right-center field, 1-0 Emeralds.
That lead was short-lived, however, as the AquaSox would explode in the bottom half of the second inning, bringing home five Frogs. Bobby Honeyman and Nick Rodriguez got the party started, hitting back-to-back solo home runs. The hits continued in the inning as Ryan Ramiz tripled off the right-center field wall, bringing home Jansiel Rivera who walked earlier in the inning. With two outs on the scoreboard, Canó stepped up to the plate and proved his All-Star status, knocking a two-run home run, the third dinger of the inning, to right field. This was Canó's first Minor League home run since April 16, 2005, when he was a member of the Columbus Clippers. The inning would end with a four-run AquaSox lead, 5-1.
With the benefit of a four-run cushion, AquaSox starter Max Roberts countered his one-run second inning with 2.2 scoreless innings. After dealing two outs in the top of the fifth inning, the left-hander appeared to aggravate his arm. Manager Jose Moreno aired on the side of caution and brought in reliever Cody Brown. Roberts finished with a line of 4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 6 SO. Roberts now leads the AquaSox in strikeouts with 47.
The pitching change proved to be devastating for Everett as Eugene mustered up a two-out-five-run rally to regain the lead. Emeralds Andy Weber, Velazquez, and Jake Slaughter logged a pair of singles and a double respectively, rewarding the Emeralds with a slim one-run lead.
For two innings, the score remained 6-5 Eugene until Slaughter launched a grand slam off Frogs reliever Cody Mobley, his first professional home run. Suddenly the AquaSox, who had a comfortable four-run lead earlier, were now down five runs.
Cal Raleigh stepped up to the plate with no outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning and was able to bring in a run off a soft infield single. The next three batters were unable to get on base, though, and the AquaSox stranded three men on base, 10-6.
That turned out to be the last run Everett would score, and the game would come to an end with the Emeralds on top, 10-6.
Friday the Everett AquaSox will continue their series against the Eugene Emeralds with Local Heroes Night and first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Everett Police and Everett Fire will host a Home Run Derby on the field starting at 6 PM until 6:25 PM for bragging rights until 2019. Former Everett AquaSox and current Seattle Mariners prospect Braden Bishop will be in attendance for 4MOM Charity and a bobblehead in his likeness will be distributed to the first 1,000 fans in attendance presented by Tulalip Resort Casino. The AquaSox will wear special Superhero jerseys throughout the game that will be auctioned off on the concourse with proceeds benefiting the AquaSox Community Fund.
