After giving up four runs in his last outing Monday night against the Reno Aces, RHP Brandon Woodruff bounced back in a big way against the 51s, shutting out Las Vegas over five innings while striking out six batters and allowing five hits. The righty shut out a Pacific Coast League opponent for the first time since May 28 at Nashville, and struck out the most batters since striking out nine Dodgers at Oklahoma City June 3.
Woodruff received some help from some great defense, including a pair of outfield assists. 51s outfielder Victor Cruzado lined a second-inning double to left field, but Brett Phillips began a 7-6-2 relay to throw out Josh Rodriguez at home plate. Three innings later, right fielder Nate Orf made a diving catch in foul territory and promptly doubled off Gavin Cecchini to end the fifth inning.
The Sox (63-41) continue their lone season series with the 51s Sunday night at 8:05 p.m. MT. RHP Angel Ventura (5-2, 3.83 ERA) looks to build upon his July 25 victory when he faces Las Vegas right-hander Donovan Hand (2-5, 8.05 ERA).
