The Sugar Land Space Cowboys (30-37) were held to just five hits in a 5-3 defeat to the Sacramento River Cats (32-35) in front of 7,814 fans on Friday night at Constellation Field, the largest crowd for the ballpark since the Space Cowboys became affiliated in 2021.
Sacramento scored one in the first on a fielder’s choice, added on another in the third on a double and tagged RHP Bryan Garcia (L, 2-4) for two more runs in the top of the fifth, building a 4-0 lead.
RHP Tanner Andrews (W, 3-2) was the third pitcher for the River Cats, who held the Space Cowboys without a hit into the fifth inning. JJ Matijevic put the first hit on the board in emphatic fashion, launching an opposite-field laser to left, his eighth home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Sugar Land brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Quincy Hamilton singled and after a strikeout, David Hensley walked. A lineout to deep right for Matijevic was the second out, but a walk to Joe Perez loaded the bases for Luke Berryhill. The Space Cowboys first baseman squared up a pitch but drove it to straightaway center for the final out, ending the threat.
A solo home run Bryce Johnson in the top of the eighth push Sacramento back to a four-run lead. Perez singled with two outs in the ninth for Sugar Land, bringing up Berryhill, who uncorked a 406-foot bomb to center, his fifth homer of the year, pulling the Space Cowboys within two runs. RHP Cole Waites was able to induce a pop out to end the game and secure the win for Sacramento.
Sugar Land continues their six-game tilt with Sacramento on Saturday night. LHP Nick Allgeyer is scheduled to start while the River Cats have not named a starter. The game can be heard on ESPN 92.5 FM or online here and seen on MiLB.TV.
