What's Happening
+ The Flying Squirrels embark on a nine-game road trip beginning tonight in Hartford, CT. This is the longest trip of the season for the Flying Squirrels and it includes four games against the Yard Goats and a rare five-game series in Harrisburg against the Senators. Richmond wrapped up a rain-soaked seven-game, six-day homestand that featured a pair of doubleheaders and two rain-shortened games. The team played one nine inning game in the stretch - Sunday afternoon vs. Bowie - and won in walk-off fashion 4-3. Richmond took two out of three to begin the homestand against Altoona and split the four game series with Bowie.

Scouting Yard Goats
+The Flying Squirrels return to Hartford for the second time and final time in 2018. Richmond took two out of three in Hartford (April 9-11) and did the same at The Diamond (April 27-29). Overall Richmond will play the Goats 13 times in the 2018 season and they currently lead the series, 4-2. The Goats have been incredibly streaky this season. They lost the first seven games to begin the year and had another seven game skid from the end of May into June. Hartford is currently second in the Eastern League in batting (.258) and tied for second in the League with 70 home runs. The Team still boasts Colorado Rockies No. 1 prospect Brendan Rodgers but no longer carries spark plug Garrett Hampson who was promoted to Triple-A on May 17.
Walk-Off Winners
Richmond closed out the most recent homestand on Sunday with their fifth walk-off win of the season. The Squirrels Jonah Arenado lofted a fly ball with the bases loaded and nobody out to end the contest and split the four-game series with Bowie. Here is a list f t walk-off moments this season:
- 4/15 vs REA- Jerry Sands single w/bases loaded
- 5/11 vs. TRE - Dillon Dobson walkoff home run
- 5/31 vs. Bowie - Jebavy two-run infield single off the second base bag in the ninth inning.
- 6/12 vs POR - Jeff Arnold two-run RBI double with RIC down 1-0
-6 /24 vs Bowie - Jonah Arenado Sacrifice fly to right ends game and homestand, 4-3
CJ The Destroyer
Flying Squirrels shortstop CJ Hinojosa has not missed a beat since returning to the team on 6/12. Hinojosa has hit safely in all ten games since arriving from San Jose. The Texan has gone 11-35 (.314) with four double and five RBI. The ten game hitting streak is the longest for a Squirrels player this season, surpassing Jerry Sands nine-game stretch earlier this month. The Eastern League's official record has Hinojosa's streak at 11 games - dating back to his last game in 2017 with Richmond. Jeff McNeil of Binghamton has the longest hitting streak in the circuit this season with 17. (Hinojosa began the year on the restricted list.)
Lovable Lipka
Flying Squirrels outfielder Matt Lipka has improved drastically over the past couple weeks from his poor start to the season. Lipka hit .216 in the month of April, .163 in the month of May, but has been hitting to a .322 average over 20 games played in June. The former first round selection by the Atlanta Braves had hit more doubles (4) and has driven in more runs (7) in the first 11 games played this month than the first two months of the season combined.
Patient First Injury Update
The Flying Squirrels have dealt with their fair share of injuries this month. Jonah Arenado returned from a 32 game absence (shoulder) on 6/7. RHP Cory Taylor was placed on the DL (arm) the same day Arenado returned. Taylor was shipped out to Arizona to rehab the injury on Monday. Shortstop Ryan Howard tweaked a hamstring in the final inning of the contest on 6/10 and RHP Chase Johnson was struck by a line drive while in the dugout on 6/14. Howard returned on 6/24 after missing 13 games.
Today's Starter's: Richmond's Shaun Anderson
+ Right-hander Shaun Anderson will make his team-leading 15th start of the season and his third against the Yard Goats. Anderson is coming off perhaps his roughest outing of the year. in Wednesday's doubleheader vs. Altoona. The righty worked five innings and allowed a career-high 11 hits in the loss. Anderson allowed five runs in the effort and struck out six. He did not walk a batter for the second time in an outing this season. Anderson made his second start of the year at DD Park against the Yard Goats and worked six innings and allowed three runs on six hits in a loss. The righty has tossed at least five innings in all 14 starts this season and ranks second in the league in strikeouts with 82.
Today's Starter: Hartford's Evan Grills
+ .The lefty Grills makes his fourth start of the season and his first against Richmond. The southpaw missed all of the 2017 season due to Tommy John surgery (May 2017). Grills was initially selected by the Houston Astros in the 10th round of the 2010 draft out of Sinclair Secondary, Whitby, ON. He reached Triple-A Fresno for three games in 2016 (1-2, 2.55). The Rockies signed Grills to a minor league contract in Novemebr of 2016. Grills will work on five days rest, coming off an outing Tues. @ AKR (4IP, R, 4H, 7K)
