STEVE GARVEY, TONY FERNANDEZ TO SIGN AUTOGRAPHS AT CHIEFS GAMES

The Syracuse Chiefs are pleased to announce that two former Major League stars will appear at NBT Bank Stadium to sign autographs this August. 1974 National League MVP Steve Garvey will appear and sign autographs on Sunday, August 6th, as part of Cancer Awareness Day, while five-time All-Star and former Chief Tony Fernandez will join to sign autographs on Latino Night on Thursday, August 31st. Tickets for both games are on sale now.

On Sunday, August 6th, Garvey will sign autographs from 12 to 12:30 and from 1 to 2 p.m. on the concourse, before and during the Chiefs' 1:05 game against the Rochester Red Wings. Garvey will also throw out the first pitch before the game on Cancer Awareness Day presented by Hematology Oncology Associates (HOA). Those day's Cancer Awareness jerseys will be auctioned off to raise money for CancerConnects.

"While Steve Garvey never played for the Chiefs, he is a baseball superstar that fans love and want to meet", said Chiefs general manager Jason Smorol. "Steve is directly involved in cancer research, and he's eager to help raise funds and awareness for all types of cancer. We are thrilled we could get a player of Steve Garvey's status to come support this day and meet our fans."

Garvey collected 2,599 hits and 272 home runs in a standout 19-year Major League career from 1969 to 1987 between the Dodgers and Padres. He was selected to ten All-Star Games, winning a pair of All-Star MVPs, and was named National League MVP in 1974. Garvey holds the National League record for most consecutive games played at 1,207, the fourth-longest streak in Major League history.

Fernandez will join the Chiefs for this year's Latino Night, presented by Pawn King, on a $1.00 Thursday on August 31st. He will sign autographs from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m., with a first pitch in between. During the game on Latino Night, the Chiefs will wear special "Los Chiefs" jerseys and serve tacos and quesadillas on the concourse.

"Latino Night gives us an opportunity to show what a strong connection we have to the Latino community in Central New York," said Smorol. "From all the former Chiefs to our partnerships with CNY Latino, La Casita and RBI Baseball, Latino Night allows us to engage with more positive groups that make up Central New York. It is a proud moment for the Chiefs to help grow this night with a superstar like Tony Fernandez."

Fernandez was a two-time International League All-Star who played for the Chiefs from 1981-84. He was named to the Syracuse Baseball All-Millennium Team and was inducted into the Syracuse Baseball Wall of Fame in 2003. Fernandez played 17 Major League seasons with seven teams, primarily the Blue Jays, with whom he won a 1993 World Series championship. He was named to five All-Star teams in his career.
