DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 11, 2018) - The Charlotte Stone Crabs racked up eight runs on 12 hits in Game 1 and got a terrific pitching performance from Brandon Lawson in Game 2, but were swept by the Daytona Tortugas by 11-8 and 2-0 scores Wednesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
GAME 1
In Game 1, the Tortugas (5-1) wasted no time getting to Stone Crabs starter Brock Burke . Mitch Nay and Daniel Sweet both singled to start the second inning before Brantley Bell pulled a base hit to left to score Nay and give Daytona a 1-0 lead. After Bell stole second, Burke issued a wild pitch, allowing Sweet to score and make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Burke uncorked another wild pitch, pushing home Bell and making the tally 3-0.
But the Stone Crabs got the runs right back in the top of the third against Daytona starter Jesse Adams. Lucius Fox started things with a single to center before Josh Lowe doubled to right to move Fox to third. Adams was then relieved by Alex Webb, who surrendered a single to Robbie Tenerowicz , allowing both runners to score and make the score 3-2. Nate Lowe followed by lining a double to right center to plate Tenerowicz and tie the game at three.
With the game still tied at three in the top of the fourth, David Olmedo-Barrera tripled to deep left before Peter Maris walked. Fox then bounced a ball to first, plating Olmedo-Barrera who beat the throw to the plate to give Charlotte a 4-3 advantage. Josh Lowe followed by knocking a triple to left to score both runners and make the count 6-3. Tenerowicz was next, smacking a single to center to chase home Lowe and give the Stone Crabs a 7-3 lead.
However, the Charlotte bullpen couldn't hold it. After Taylor Trammell drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth, Luis Gonzalez and Tyler Stephenson both singled to load the bases. Spencer Jones (0-1) then came in and hit Nay with a pitch to force home a run and make it 7-4. The next batter was Sweet, who singled to right to score Gonzalez and make it 7-5. After a fielder's choice drove home another run, pinch hitter TJ Friedl lined a double to the corner in left, driving home two runs to give Daytona an 8-7 lead.
The Tortugas would add three more runs in the bottom of the sixth before Maris drove home Kevin Padlo on a single in the seventh to cap the scoring at 11-8. Tortugas reliever Ryan Hendrix (1-0) worked 1.2 scoreless innings to get the win. Hendrix was the only pitcher that didn't allow runs in the game.
GAME 2
The second game of Wednesday's doubleheader was a true pitcher's duel. Daytona starter Tony Santillan (1-0) held the Stone Crabs to one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings, striking out eight.
Charlotte starter Brandon Lawson went five shutout frames before running into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. With the game tied 0-0, Lawson allowed a one-out triple to Friedl. After Lawson induced a groundout to keep Friedl at second with two outs, Luis Gonzalez rolled a ball down the third base line. Gonzalez beat out the play for an infield single, scoring Friedl to give Daytona a 1-0 lead. The next batter was Tyler Stephenson, who singled off the third base bag to extend the Tortugas advantage to 2-0.
Daytona reliever Jesse Stallings worked a perfect seventh inning to earn his first save.
The Stone Crabs will look to salvage the series finale Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Kenny Rosenberg (0-0, 6.75) gets the start for Charlotte against LHP Scott Moss (1-0, 1.59) of the Tortugas. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
