SAN ANTONIO – The Flying Chanclas de San Antonio continued their six-game homestand with the Frisco RoughRiders on Thursday night. Daniel Camarena gave up an early run but kept San Antonio in the game with five solid innings before letting the bullpen get to work. The Flying Chanclas cashed in three runs in the sixth, and that proved to be enough despite a dramatic ninth inning that saw San Antonio hang onto a 3-2 win.

Camarena started for the Flying Chanclas in their bright blue and pink jerseys. After a perfect first inning, Camarena gave up a single in the second inning and a long fly ball to left field that looked like trouble. Cole Cummings fought through the setting sun, made it all the way back to the wall and leapt to make the catch for the third out.

Frisco starting pitcher Ryan Garcia similarly set the Flying Chanclas down in order to begin the game before facing a threat in the second inning. Juan Fernandez led off with a double and eventually advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brandon Valenzuela then reached base with a walk, bringing Justin Farmer to the plate for the first time in a San Antonio uniform. With two away, Garcia struck out Farmer looking, keeping the game scoreless.

In the third inning, Frisco got on the board first. Their two-out rally began when Luisangel Acuña doubled. He came around to score thanks to an Evan Carter single. Camarena retired the next batter, but the RoughRiders led 1-0.

Garcia set down eight consecutive San Antonio batters before hitting Valenzuela with one out in the fifth inning. Valenzuela stayed there, however, as Frisco remained on top by one.

After allowing a run in the third, Camarena held the RoughRiders off the board as Frisco managed only a walk across the fourth and fifth innings. When the game entered the sixth frame, Blake Cederlind came in from the bullpen to make his San Antonio debut. The hard-throwing righty gave up a single and two walks, but a caught stealing sandwiched between a pair of strikeouts helped him escape with no damage done.

The Flying Chanclas interrupted Garcia’s cruising when they started the sixth inning with a Daniel Johnson single and a Michael De La Cruz walk. Despite fanning Pedro Castellanos, Garcia’s night ended with one out and two on in the sixth. Fernandez greeted Justin Slaten with a game-tying single to left field, and San Antonio got two in scoring position off an errant throw home. Ray-Patrick Didder took full advantage, bringing both runners home with a base hit to left. Slaten finished the sixth inning from there, but the Flying Chanclas now sat on top 3-1 and put Cederlind in position for the win in his debut.

Jose Quezada took on the task of holding onto San Antonio’s lead, and he aced his initial test. He erased a leadoff walk with a double play and then registered a strikeout, so the Flying Chanclas continued to lead 3-1 as the Wolff Stadium crowd stretched.

The bottom of the seventh inning looked fine for Frisco and their new pitcher Eudrys Manon, who picked up two quick outs. However, Johnson punched another single and stole two bases to make it all the way to third. De La Cruz added a walk, but Castellanos popped out to end the inning.

Quezada stayed on the mound for the eighth. Frisco knocked on the door with a single and a walk that preceded both runners getting into scoring position. Quezada wiggled out of the jam, so San Antonio still led 3-1.

In the ninth, Alek Jacob jogged onto the bump looking to close the game, but Frisco refused to ride quietly into the night. A pair of walks provided an ominous start, and Acuña made things even scarier with an RBI single that made it a 3-2 game. Not to worry though, as Jakob induced a weak grounder to first to seal his fifth save of the year and a 3-2 Flying Chanclas victory.
