MIDLAND - C.J. Stubbs clubbed a pair of home runs while his batterymate Colton Gordon struck out 10 over five impressive innings Friday night as the Hooks edged the RockHounds, 4-3, before 4,056 fans at Momentum Bank Ballpark.
Corpus Christi was won three in a row while taking a 3-1 lead in the series at Midland. The four contests have been decided by a total of five runs.
The Hooks went to work in the first as Kenedy Corona reached by rolling a single to the bag at third. Corona stole second and then promptly scored on a base hit by Joey Loperfido, who has 13 RBIs in seven Double-A games.
Stubbs put the Hooks ahead for good at 3-2 in the fourth as he capitalized on a Colin Barber walk by searing a line drive into the left-field bullpen for a two-run home run. He would add insurance in the ninth with a lead-off clout that traveled an estimated 423 feet to left-center.
After permitting a pair of first-inning runs, Gordon proceeded to retire 10 of 11 while striking out eight in the sequence en route to his first Double-A win. The 24-year-old southpaw punched out his 10th batter - a new personal best - to strand two on base in the fifth.
