ASHEVILLE- The Asheville Tourists defeated the Rome Emperors in a pair of contests on Sunday afternoon. Asheville used a Logan Cerny three-run walk-off Home Run to win Game One 7-6; then exploded offensively, built a big lead, and cruised in Game Two, 9-4.
The first game was picked up in the top of the second inning from a rain suspension the night before. The Tourists were trailing 3-0 but Asheville started the day strong with a four-run bottom of the second inning. Austin Deming, Luis Encarnacion, and Jeron Williams all had RBI hits in the frame.
Rome responded and took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh. With two runners aboard, two outs, and two strikes, Cerny clobbered a Jared Johnson pitch 447-feet over the left-centerfield wall and the Tourists celebrated the 7-6 walk off win. Joey Mancini pitched four innings, allowed one run, and struck out six.
In Game Two the Tourists scored nine unanswered runs after Rome took a 2-0 lead. Edinson Batista dazzled through five innings and earned the win on his 22nd birthday. Williams and Luis Baez each added two more hits and Garret Guillemette parked a two-run Homer in the fifth inning.
The double-header sweep clinched the series for Asheville. The Tourists will hit the road for a six-game set at Hickory with Game One against the Crawdads scheduled for 7:00pm ET on Tuesday.
