Hagerstown, MD - The Hagerstown Suns were swept in a double header on Tuesday evening against the Delmarva Shorebirds, losing game one 7-2 and falling in the second game 7-3 at Hagerstown Municipal Stadium. The Suns fell to 3-9 overall and will face the Shorebirds on Wednesday morning with a 10:35 AM first pitch to close out the team's first homestand of the 2018 season.
Delmarva got out to an early three-run lead in the first inning of game one against Suns starter Alex Troop. Krivin Moesquit walked and Zach Jarrett doubled to left, moving Moesquit to third. Will Robertson reached on an error by Suns third baseman Luis Garcia that scored Moesquit and Jarrett to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead with Robertson going to second. With one out, T.J. Nichting tripled to right field, scoring Robertson to extend Delmarva's lead to 3-0.
The Shorebirds added a run in the fourth against Troop in his final inning of work. The lefty struck out Nichting to start the inning, but Seamus Curran homered to right-center field on the second pitch of the at-bat to extend Delmarva's lead to 4-0. Troop allowed a two-out single to Ryan Ripken but got Mason McCoy to fly out to end the inning.
Delmarva added two runs in the top of the sixth against Suns reliever Carlos Acevedo when Ripken singled to center, scoring Nichting and Craport to give the Shorebirds a 6-0 advantage. Hagerstown scratched their first two runs of the game across in the bottom of the inning when Juan Soto doubled home Cole Freeman and Garcia singled to left with two outs to score Soto and make it a 6-2 game.
The Shorebirds added a run in the seventh inning against Acevedo and defeated Hagerstown by a final score of 7-2 in game one. Troop (1-1) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts over four innings. Jeremy McKinney threw one scoreless inning of relief without allowing a baserunner. Acevedo allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
In game two Delmarva jumped out to another early lead, this time against Hagerstown starter Nick Raquet. Moesquit walked to lead off the game and Jarrett launched his third homer of the season to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead. Raquet bounced back, retiring the next three hitters to end the inning.
Hagerstown halved the deficit in the bottom of the first against DL Hall, who started the game for Delmarva. Freeman reached on a fielding error and with one out Soto singled to center. With Freeman on second, Anderson Franco singled to center, scoring Freeman and making it a 2-1 ballgame. Soto moved to second on Franco's hit, but Garcia and Kameron Esthay struck out to end the inning.
The Suns pulled even in the third against Hall and the Shorebirds. Yasel Antuna stroked a leadoff single to center and Soto and Franco walked to load the bases with no outs. Garcia grounded into a double play that scored Antuna and moved Soto to third, but Esthay struck out to end the threat with the game tied at 2-2.
Hagerstown took a short-lived lead in the fourth against Shorebirds reliever Gray Fenter. With two outs, Armond Upshaw hit his first home run of the season to center field, putting the Suns up 3-2. It's Upshaw's first homer since September 7 of last year when he hit his first professional home run.
Delmarva took the lead back for good in the fifth against Raquet and A.J. Bogucki. With two outs Frank Crinella singled to left and after a mound visit, Moesquit reached on an error to move Crinella into scoring position. Raquet was replaced with Bogucki, and the first pitch he threw Jarrett smacked over the centerfield wall to give the Shorebirds a 5-3 lead. The homer was Jarrett's second of the game and Delmarva's third of the day. The Shorebirds added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh, giving them a 7-3 victory in the second game of the double header, insuring a series win against the Suns.
Raquet (0-2) allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 4.2 innings of work. Bogucki went 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
