Marty Herum delivered an RBI single that gave the Jackson Generals (54-46, 15-15) a walk-off 2-1 win over the Biloxi Shuckers (59-41, 18-12) on Monday night at the Ballpark at Jackson. RHP Trey Supak hurled eight innings for the Shuckers in the loss.
After four scoreless frames, Luis Aviles Jr. Jr. put the Shuckers on the board in the top of the fifth. With two outs, the shortstop launched a solo home run to left, his second of the season, giving Biloxi a 1-0 edge. It broke up a string of 12 straight retired by Generals RHP Taylor Widener, who finished his outing by sitting down nine of the final ten men he faced.
Supak kept the Generals off balance all night, giving up just two hits, a single in the first and a single in the third. The lone run the right-hander allowed came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ben DeLuzio reached on a throwing error by Aviles. The centerfielder then stole third and scored on a passed ball, tying the game at one all. Supak finished his night by retiring the final nine batters that he faced, logging eight innings while walking just one and striking out five. His eight innings matches a career high for the longest outing of his career.
Widener departed in the top of the eighth, giving way to RHP Tommy Eveld (W, 1-0), who made his Double-A debut. Eveld retired all four batters he faced on three fly ball outs and a groundout.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Domingo Lebya drew a walk against RHP Jon Olczak (L, 5-3). Jose Vinicio came in as a pinch runner and moved to second when Rudy Flores was hit by a pitch. Herum stepped the plate and bounced a ball just beyond the stretch of Lucas Erceg at third, bringing Vinicio around to score the winning run.
Biloxi continues their five-game series with Jackson on Tuesday night at 6:05 PM. The Shuckers are slated to send RHP Luis Ortiz (1-4, 4.11) to the mound against Generals RHP Justin Donatella (4-5, 3.27). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
