*Fredericksburg, VA* – The Augusta GreenJackets (Atlanta Braves) concluded a tough week in Virginia with a Sunday loss to the Fredericksburg Nationals (Washington Nationals), falling 7-0. Fredericksburg (24-23, 54-56) held Augusta to one hit in the game, while Augusta (21-27, 52-61) fell to a season-low nine games below .500.
Georgia native Liam Sullivan made his second start for the FredNats, and showcased a nice feel for the strike zone. In three innings of work, Sullivan fanned six, while only giving up one baserunner in the form of a Will Verdung walk. Lucas Braun got the nod for Augusta and surrendered a run in the first to the lethal duo of Dylan Crews and Yohendry Morales, but then retired the next eight men he faced.
Meanwhile, Augusta’s offense remained utterly profligate, as after Will Verdung walked to begin the second, seven of the next eight batters struck out. Verdung was the next batter to reach, singling to begin the fourth, but he would remain the only Jacket to reach base until the seventh inning, when Cam Magee worked a walk. Lucas Braun continued to hold the Nationals in check, striking out five batters, but gave up a single that turned into a run after a costly error in the outfield.
Trailing 2-0 after five, the offense remained silent. Seth Keller replaced Lucas Braun and worked out of a jam in the sixth, but gave up a two-run single to Morales in the seventh as the FredNats extended the lead to 4-0. The GreenJackets got two men on base for the first time all game via walks in the eighth, but remained blanked on the scoreboard. Elison Joseph pitched the eighth and gave up three runs, but none of them were earned as Augusta made two more errors behind him. Down 7-0, Augusta went quietly into the night in the final frame.
Augusta concludes the road trip with a 5-7 record, but winning just once in their lone series in Fredericksburg. Augusta scored 15 runs in their Friday night win, while scoring just 12 in the other five games combined. The Sunday loss marked the first time the team had been held to just one hit over nine innings on the season.
