ASHEVILLE- Sunday afternoon’s series finale at McCormick Field between the Asheville Tourists and the Brooklyn Cyclones favored the home team right from the start. Asheville jumped on Brooklyn with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on to win 8-1 behind great pitching from Nic Swanson and Alex Santos II.
Swanson started the game and worked five scoreless innings. Only one base-runner reached against Swanson, a one-out hit in the fourth, and Nic struck out five to earn his first win of the season. Santos II also limited the Cyclones to one hit in his four innings on the mound. Santos II struck out six and notched his second save of the season.
Zach Cole and Jacob Melton both had two hits in the first inning. Ryan Wrobleski plated a pair with a two-run single, Rolando Espinosa had an RBI double, John Garcia hit a Sacrifice Fly, and one of Cole’s hits brought in the seventh run of the opening frame.
Tyler Whitaker added a solo Home Run in the bottom of the second; his third round-tripper of the week. The Tourists had a few scoring opportunities later in the game; however, the eight early runs were more than enough thanks to Asheville’s stellar pitching. Cole, Melton, and Wrobleski all finished with two hits.
Following the off day on Monday, Asheville will entertain the Bowling Green Hot Rods for the final home series of the 2023 season. Tuesday’s game at McCormick Field will begin at 6:35pm.
