In Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, the Albuquerque Isotopes (38-36) hung on to beat the Fresno Grizzlies (45-29) 3-2 at Chukchansi Park. After coming within four outs of a no-hitter in his last start, Fresno starter Trent Thornton (5-5) took a hard-luck loss. He hurled six innings, scattering seven hits, three runs (earned), while walking and striking out a pair. On the other hand, Albuquerque reliever Shane Broyles (3-1) enjoyed the win after one and two-thirds of shutout ball. He followed Antonio Senzatela, who fanned five in three-plus innings. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three free passes.
The Grizzlies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. A walk to Tim Federowicz started the carousel. Then, Jon Kemmer singled sharply to right, where the ball was booted. Federowicz thundered home and Kemmer got to third on the error. Kemmer would waltz home on the next pitch, thanks to a laser single to center by Jack Mayfield (2-for-3).
Albuquerque quickly cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the third courtesy of three straight singles and a double play. In the top of the fifth, the Isotopes knotted the contest at two when Raimel Tapia (2-for-3) spanked a double to center field, plating Ryan McMahon.
Finally, Mike Tauchman (2-for-4) walloped a game-winning homer to dead center in the top of the sixth. His 11th dinger made it 3-2 Isotopes. That would be enough for Mike Dunn and Scott Oberg, both on MLB rehab, to shut the door. Oberg picked up his third save in the process.
Kyle Tucker pushed his team-high hitting streak to 12 games with a single to right in the seventh. Myles Straw added two hits in the loss. Fresno fell to 8-11 in one-run games and 14-3 when scoring first at home.
