Charleston, WV - Jackson Tetreault tossed his second-straight quality start against the West Virginia Power while Yasel Antuna homered and scored three runs in Saturday evening's 4-2 victory for the Hagerstown Suns at Appalachian Power Park. The Suns improve to 32-52 overall with a second-half record of 5-11 and will play the second game of the three-game set against the Power on Sunday with a 2:05 PM first pitch.
The Suns were first to score, tagging Power starter Cody Bolton for a run in the opening frame. Yasel Antuna led off the game with a single and Cole Freeman singled to center, giving the Suns runners at first and second. Both moved up a base after executing a double steal and Antuna scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Gage Canning to give the Suns a 1-0 lead. Freeman was thrown out at third trying to advance on the play and Jake Scudder grounded out to end the inning.
West Virginia took the lead in the third against Suns starter Tetreault with a pair of runs. With two outs, Fabricio Macias walked and Oneil Cruz homered on the second pitch he saw to give the Power a 2-1 advantage.
The Suns flexed their muscles in the fifth to take the lead once again with Bolton still on the mound. Nick Choruby led off with a single and stole second, going to third when Armond Upshaw grounded out for the second out of the inning. Antuna bashed his fifth homer of the season to right-center, plating a pair of runs and giving Hagerstown a 3-2 lead.
Hagerstown extended their lead in the eighth against Power reliever Drew Fischer. Antuna and Freeman walked and Canning laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up a station. Scudder lifted a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Antuna to make it a 4-2 game. The run was Antuna's third of the night and he finished the day 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and a walk in the victory.
Tetreault (3-7) earned a win after holding West Virginia to two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts over seven quality innings. Jared Johnson earned his first hold of the season by throwing the eighth while issuing one walk. Frankie Bartow earned his first save of the year by throwing a spotless ninth with a strikeout.
Notes: Tetreault has thrown seven innings in back-to-back starts and is the only Suns pitcher to do so this season… It's the third time in his career he's thrown seven innings, which is a career-high… Over 21 innings of work against Pirates affiliates in his career, the righty has allowed just three earned runs… Antuna tied a career-high with three runs scored… The last time he accomplished the feat was on April 10 at Columbia… He also logged his 16th multi-hit game of the season… It was also his seventh multi-RBI game of the year… Meregildo had his third multi-hit game of the year… Saturday is the 10th time Hagerstown has won the first game of a series… Hagerstown stole four bases on Saturday, two shy of their season-high of six which was set on May 12 against Charleston… Scudder collected his 30th RBI of the season and is the active team leader in the category… Only Luis Garcia had more, driving in 31 before his promotion to Potomac… Hagerstown continues the three-game series against the West Virginia Power on Sunday afternoon with a 2:05 PM first pitch… The Suns will send RHP Malvin Pena (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound against Power RHP Travis MacGregor (1-1, 2.91 ERA).
