CLINTON, IA (June 15, 2017) - Nick Thurman was the hero for the Clinton Lumberkings in a 4-3 11 inning walk-off win over the Beloit Snappers on Thursday night at Ashford University Field. The LumberKings (30-34) catcher started the scoring with an inside-the-park home run before completing the sweep with Clinton's first walk-off win of the season.
Clinton has now won five straight and eight of their last nine, sweeping the Snappers (31-35) for the second time this year.
The game settled into a pitcher's duel early on and it was not until a Trace Loehr RBI single to left in the third inning that the game's first run was scored, giving Beloit a 1-0 lead.
The LumberKings then took the lead with a three-run bottom of the fifth inning. Thurman lead-off with a fly ball to left that was nearly caught by Snappers left fielder Luke Persico. The ball appeared to be in Perisco's mitt but the left fielder then crashed in the left field wall and dropped the ball. He was unable to rise to his feet allowing Thurman to circle the bases for his first professional career inside-the-park home run, and his third home run of the season.
Perisco was forced to leave the game following the collision with the wall, but was able to walk off the field on his own power.
Two more runs for the LumberKings scored in the inning when Jhombeyker Morales extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a two out single and moved to second on a Joe Rizzo walk. Yojhan Quevedo then capped the inning with a two run double to right center field.
The lead did not hold up for Clinton as Beloit rallied to put one run on the board in the sixth inning and another run in eighth to tie the game at 3-3.
The game stayed tied into extra innings. Jeffeson Medina (2-0) kept the score tied with two shutout innings of relief and earned the win after retiring the Snappers 1-2-3 in the top of the 11th inning.
The game deciding rally in the bottom of the 11th inning began with a Gareth Morgan lead-off walk against Snappers reliever Jesus Zambrano. Morgan then stole second base and was removed for a pinch runner, Anthony Jimenez. With one out, Zambrano (0-2) threw wildly to second on a pickoff attempt allowing Jimenez to move to third. Nick Thurman then lofted the game winning single down the left field line to score Jimenez from third.
The LumberKings will play hit the road for their final series of the first half with the first of three games with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday night. Left-handed pitcher Nick Wells (2-6, 6.99) will take the ball for Clinton and face Cedar Rapid's right-handed pitcher Eduardo Del Rosario (6-3, 5.08). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (CDT) with the pregame show beginning at 6:20 PM (CDT) on 100.3 FM WCCI Erik Oas is on the call.
