Tides survive rain, late Bulls rally in 5-4 win
The Norfolk Tides used a wild pitch to survive a late Bulls rally - and a long mid-game rain delay - to walk-off with a 5-4, 10-inning win over Durham Friday night at Harbor Park.
The Norfolk Tides used a wild pitch to survive a late Bulls rally - and a long mid-game rain delay - to walk-off with a 5-4, 10-inning win over Durham Friday night at Harbor Park.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the 10th, Drew Dosch ignited the game-winning spurt with a leadoff double to right-center off of Danny Farquhar (0-1). Pedro Álvarez grounded a ball to second base that moved Dosch to third, but Farquhar followed by striking out Chance Sisco for the second out of the frame. Farquhar then uncorked a 1-1 pitch that got by catcher Curt Casali and bounded to the backstop, allowing Dosch to scamper home with the winning run and give the Tides their eighth walk-off victory of the season.
Norfolk had led the contest 4-3 in the eighth inning, but Durham knotted the score on a two-out double by Casali that scored Patrick Leonard from third.
Norfolk starter Jayson Aquino yielded three runs on six hits over 4.0-plus innings of work before a strong line of storms delayed the game for one hour and 36 minutes. Aquino walked two and struck out a pair, with Leonard touching him up for an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run home run in the third.
Aquino now owns a 7.61 ERA (20 ER, 23.2 IP) in four starts against the Bulls this season and a 3.06 ERA (16 ER, 47.0 IP) in his other eight starts against the International League.
Paul Janish belted a two-run homer in the fourth frame off of Bulls starter Austin Pruitt that tied the game at 3-3. The homer was the third of the season for Janish, who also singled in his second game back with the Tides from Baltimore.
David Washington, Luis Sardiñas and Álvarez all had multi-hit games for the Tides, as Norfolk snapped a 13-game stretch in which they had failed to plate more than four runs in a game.
The two clubs will continue their four-game series on Saturday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. In a battle of Virginia college products, UVA's Tyler Wilson (2-5, 4.91) will get the start for Norfolk against Old Dominion left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (8-4, 3.79).
On Saturday, the Tides will wear pink jerseys and the bases at Harbor Park will be pink to help raise awareness for those affected by breast cancer. Gates to the park will open at 5:30 pm, with fans allowed onto the field to take photos with their favorite Tides players from 5:45 - 6:15, courtesy of Canon Virginia.
Notes: The temperature at first pitch was 96 degrees, with a heat index of 104…Earlier Friday, the Orioles outrighted outfielder Craig Gentry to Norfolk to make room for IF Chris Davis, who was reinstated from the disabled list…Andrew Faulkner (2-0) earned the win by recording the final out of the 10th frame…Richard Rodriguez lowered his ERA to 2.53 with 2.1 shutout innings of relief…David Washington and Drew Dosch each hit their 20th doubles of the season.
