Tebow invited to Mets' Major League camp

Tim Tebow is headed back to the Majors. Well, sort of.
Tebow was among nine players invited Friday to Major League camp when the Mets open Spring Training next month in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Tebow, who wrapped up his first season in baseball last fall, was also among the Minor Leaguers the Mets called up for several big league exhibition games last year.

Tebow, 30, could take the field to begin his second season on Feb. 23, when the Mets kick off their Grapefruit League schedule against the Braves. Peter Alonso, P.J. Conlon, David Thompson and Corey Taylor were among the other players invited to big league camp on Friday.

Tebow was assigned to the Mets' Minor League camp last spring but was brought in to play in a handful of Grapefruit League games. He went 4-for-27 (.148) with a walk and eight strikeouts in nine contests. He split the regular season between Class A Columbia and Class A Advanced St. Lucie, batting .226 with eight homers, 52 RBIs, 50 runs scored and 43 walks. The left-handed outfielder also struck out 126 times in 126 games and owned a .309 OBP.
His results, depending on your opinion of the polarizing NFL quarterback-turned-outfield, were mixed.

Tebow spoke at the end of last season about his outlook for 2018, saying it would be a bigger year for him.
"I think it will be easier [next year] from that standpoint, mentally, knowing what to expect," he said last August. "As far as baseball goes, I think it will be a huge year for me."
Analysis: So, how did Tebow do in his first season?
Tebow signed with the Mets in September 2016 in an effort to transition from NFL quarterback to Major League outfielder. He homered in his first instructional league at-bat and went deep in his first Minor League plate appearance with Columbia before receiving a promotion on June 25 to St. Lucie.
The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner had a 12-game hitting streak from July 2-14 and hit a walk-off homer to beat Daytona on July 13.
"Those were definitely great moments, super fun and one of the best things about playing sports," he said last year. "There are so many great things, but those moments are definitely a lot of fun."
Alonso is the highest-ranked prospect among the group invited to big league game. The Mets' No. 7 prospect hit .289 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs between St. Lucie and Double-A Binghamton last season. MLB.com recently named the 23-year-old its No. 7 first-base prospect in the game for the 2018 season.
Conlon, a lefty, ended the season ranked No. 23 among Mets prospects while Thompson, a third baseman, was No. 24. Mazeika, a catcher/first baseman, hit .290 with seven homers and 55 RBIs last season as the Mets' No. 25 prospect.
