FORT WAYNE, IN - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers started their six-game road swing to the Eastern Division of the Midwest League in style. The Rattlers defeated the Fort Wayne TinCaps 2-0 on Monday night at Parkview Field. The Rattlers snapped a three-game losing streak with the shutout victory.
The TinCaps (11-20) threatened early against Timber Rattlers starting pitcher Braden Webb as they had leadoff doubles in the first and second innings. In the fifth, a leadoff single and a wild pitch put a runner at second with no outs. But, Webb stranded them all. The right-hander struck out seven over 5-2/3 innings and kept Fort Wayne off the scoreboard.
The Rattlers (13-15) had trouble getting any offense against Fort Wayne starting pitcher Jesse Scholtens. The right-hander retired the first twelve batters he faced. He had allowed two hits and no runs with no walks and struck out seven through his first 7-2/3 innings of work. That changed with one swing of the bat and one poor throw.
Jose Cuas stepped to the plate with two outs in the eighth and hit a high fly off the wall in right field. Cuas tore around the bases for third base for a triple. The relay throw to third hit Cuas in the shoulder and the ball deflected into the Wisconsin dugout to allow Cuas to score the first run of the game.
Wisconsin added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Trever Morrison singled and Mario Feliciano doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Monte Harrison, who had two of Wisconsin's six hits in the game, drove in Morrison with a broken-bat, infield single for a 2-0 advantage.
Cameron Roegner, who entered the game to get the final out of the sixth inning, closed out the game by striking out the side in order in the ninth. Roegner struck out five over 3-1/3 innings and picked up the victory.
Game two of the series is Tuesday evening at Parkview Field. Trey Supak (0-2, 2.59) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Fort Wayne has named Logan Allen (1-1, 1.50) as their starter. Game time is 6:05pm CDT.
