A disciplined approach at the plate gave the Shuckers the lead in the second inning. Luis Castro led off the frame with a double to right and Chad Spanberger was hit by a pitch to put two men on base. Castro then stole third and Ryan Aguilar worked a one-out walk to load the bases. After a strikeout by RHP Spencer Strider (L,1-4), Mitchell stepped to the plate and worked a four-pitch walk, forcing in a run to give the Shuckers a 1-0 lead.
Biloxi would put up a crooked number in the top of the fourth. Spanberger doubled to right field to start the frame and Brent Diaz and Aguilar were both hit by pitches to load up the bases. Cam Devanney struck out, bringing up Mitchell, who hit a well-placed infield single to drive in a run and keep the bases loaded, putting the Shuckers up 2-0. Turang’s sacrifice fly to center plated another run and Fry capped the rally with a two-RBI single to left, giving Biloxi a 5-0 advantage.
Mitchell would drive in his third run of the game on an infield single in the top of the fifth inning, putting the Shuckers ahead 6-0. On the mound for Biloxi, RHP Jesus Castillo (W, 2-5) turned in a quality start, allowing just one run on a solo homer to Shea Langeliers, his 15th of the season, over six innings. Castillo struck out a season high seven batters and issued just one walk.
The Shuckers pushed two more across in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Turang, giving the Shuckers’ shortstop three RBI on the evening and vaulting Biloxi ahead 8-1.
A five-run eighth inning padded the lead for the Shuckers late. Longo walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before coming in to score on a double to right by Spanberger, his second of the night. Aguilar singled up the middle to drive in Spanberger, the fifth straight time Aguilar reached in the ballgame, and Devanney walked to put two men on base for Mitchell. Facing RHP Daysbel Hernandez, the Shuckers’ center fielder singled to center, driving in Aguilar, Mitchell’s fourth RBI and third hit of the evening. Fry tagged on another with an RBI single and Longo finished the scoring with a bases-loaded walk to force in the 13th run of the ballgame.
Seeking a series sweep, the Shuckers conclude their six-game tilt with the M-Braves on Sunday afternoon at Trustmark Park. RHP Noah Zavolas (3-5, 4.95), who threw seven shutout innings against the M-Braves on Tuesday, takes the hill for the Shuckers opposite M-Braves’ LHP Hayden Deal (2-2, 4.00) for a 2:05 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin’ WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9.
