In the wake of his historic performance against the Lynchburg Hillcats at Segra Stadium on Wednesday, Fayetteville Woodpeckers Right-Handed Pitcher Jojanse Torres was honored with the Carolina League Player of the Week award on Monday. Torres earned the distinction by tossing the first complete game, and shutout, in franchise history for Fayetteville. Torres is only the second Woodpecker to win a player of the week honor, and the first pitcher. Former Woodpeckers outfielder Seth Beer was given the honors for the week of April 15th earlier this season.

Following the Woodpeckers' second ever walk-off winner, Torres started on the mound for the nightcap of a doubleheader with Lynchburg on Wednesday, and he was throwing fire from the get-go. Torres allowed just one lonely hit to Wilbis Santiago in the first frame, a flared single that bounced off the glove of sprinting shortstop Jeremy Pena. After that, the Woodpeckers' hurler allowed just one more baserunner in his outing, when he walked Mitch Reeves in the second with two outs. Jason Rodriguez immediately hit into a fielder's choice that forced the runner out and ended the inning, representing the last chance at a score that the Hillcats would get against Torres.
Torres retired sixteen consecutive batters through the seventh and final inning, fanning eight on the night, walking just one batter and allowing just one hit on the night. The fifth inning was maybe the most impressive for Torres, striking out all three batters he faced. It was the first complete game for a Woodpeckers pitcher this year, topped off with the first shutout. Torres finished the historic evening with seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out eight batters on only 84 pitches with 61 strikes.
Torres continues to climb through the Astros organization at a cheetah's pace after signing just last year. After joining Fayetteville at the end of May, Torres sports a 5-0 record, with an ERA of 2.70 over 50 innings. The 23-year-old righty is scheduled to take the mound once again when Fayetteville visits the Wilmington Blue Rocks for a three-game series.
