WINSTON-SALEM- The Asheville Tourists hung on late to defeat the Winston-Salem Dash 6-5 on Tuesday night for a series-opening victory. Asheville built a 6-1 lead and withstood a trio of Home Runs by the Dash. The home team had the tying run at second base in the bottom of the ninth; however, a groundout to short sealed the win for the Tourists.
Winston-Salem took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single into centerfield. That was the only run Asheville’s starting pitcher, Ryan Gusto, allowed. Gusto worked four innings, scattered four hits, and struck out seven.
The Tourists tied the game in the top of the second inning when Miguel Palma led off with a double, went to third on a deep flyout, and scored on Luis Guerrero’s RBI groundout. In the third, Kenedy Corona hit a leadoff double and Michael Sandle left the yard with an opposite field two-run Home Run. Asheville led 3-1 after three.
In the fifth, the Tourists loaded the bases with two outs. Palma stepped to the plate and ripped a three-run double into the left field corner. Palma and Corona both finished with two doubles in the game.
The Dash did some damage off Asheville’s reliver Ernesto Jaquez; however, the right-hander was able to cover the final five innings of the game. Jaquez surrendered three solo Home Runs as well as a run in the ninth but ultimately picked up the win.
Zach Daniels finished with a pair of hits and Luis Santana reached base three times in his first game back in over a week. The Tourists’ record sits at .500 in the second half with tonight’s win.
