Trent Thornton ties PCL-record with eight consecutive K's in 3-2 loss at Reno

The Reno Aces (6-13) edged out the Fresno Grizzlies (13-6) 3-2 Monday morning from Greater Nevada Field. Reno scored three runs in the eighth, giving Fresno their first series loss of the season.
Between the first and third innings, Trent Thornton (no-decision) stymied the Aces' bats with eight consecutive strikeouts, tying the 108-year-old PCL record. His streak ended when Ildemaro Vargas (2-for-4) flew out to left field. The feat has only been done three times, with the most recent coming in 2000. Thornton finished his day with six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and punching out nine.
Fresno cracked the safe open in the top of the sixth when Tim Federowicz (2-for-4) jacked a two-run shot to left-center. His second home run of the season made it 2-0.
Reno starter and former Grizzly Jake Buchanan (no-decision) tossed six solid innings. He scattered seven hits, walking three and striking out four. His only blemish was the bomb to Federowicz.
The Aces seized a 3-2 advantage in the bottom of the eighth with a Vargas RBI single and a César Puello two-run double off of Grizzly reliever Brendan McCurry (loss, 0-1).
Reno reliever Jake Barrett (1-0) was rewarded the win after a scoreless eighth and Jimmie Sherfy notched his second save of the season despite allowing two baserunners in the ninth.
A.J. Reed (2-for-3) reached base three times and scored a run in the defeat.
After a day off on Tuesday, the Grizzlies head back home to Chukchansi Park for a five-game series versus the Tacoma Rainiers starting on Wednesday. RHP Cy Sneed (1-0, 2.45) gets the ball for Fresno while Tacoma has yet to announce a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PT.
