'Tugas fly past Tigers, sweep doubleheader

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After back-to-back rainouts, Daytona benefitted from timely hitting and quality pitching, as the Tortugas swept a doubleheader from the Lakeland Flying Tigers, snagging game one, 6-1, and game two, 2-1, in front of 2,496 fans at Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Saturday night.

The Tortugas (11-14, 46-44) had the offense flowing in droves in the lid-lifter. With two out in the first, 2B Alejo López (1-3, 2 R, RBI) collected a single to left and LF Stuart Fairchild (0-1, R, 2 BB) drew a walk to spark a rally. SS José García (2-2, R, 2B, RBI, BB) would put Daytona ahead, 1-0, with an RBI single down the line in left.
In the second, CF Lorenzo Cedrola (1-3, R) reached on an infield single to short and swiped second base. RF Shard Munroe (1-3, RBI) drove him home with a run-producing single to center to stretch the 'Tugas advantage to 2-0.
Daytona managed to break game one open in the third. The Tortugas loaded the bases with nobody out on a throwing error and consecutive walks. 1B Bruce Yari (1-2, 3B, 3 RBI, BB) then slashed a grounder down the line in left. All three runners scored, as the 24-year-old slid into third with a triple, putting the Tortugas in the driver's seat, 5-0.
López would drive in one final tally in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left, entrenching Daytona with a 6-0 edge. Lakeland (10-15, 39-51) would break up the shutout in the fifth, as CF Brock Deatherage (2-4, R, 3B, SO) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by SS Cole Peterson (1-2, 2B, RBI, BB).
RHP Austin Orewiler (5.0 IP, 4 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 3 SO) continued to shine in the rotation, as the 26-year-old surrendered one run over five frames to collect his sixth win. Lakeland's RHP Jesús Rodríguez (2.0+ IP, 5 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) failed to escape the third inning and was saddled with his 11th defeat.
In the nightcap, it was the Flying Tigers who struck first. In the top of the second, RF Dylan Rosa (1-2, R, BB) drew a walk and 1B Nick Ames (1-3, SO) followed with a single to left. After an SS A.J. Simcox (0-2, BB) walk loaded the bases, C Jon Rosoff (0-2, RBI, SO) lofted a sacrifice fly to left to put Lakeland ahead, 1-0.
Daytona was able to knot the score up in the third. CF Andy Sugilio (2-3, R, 3B) began the frame by smashing the first pitch into the right-centerfield gap. The 22-year-old motored into third with a leadoff triple. 3B Yonathan Mendoza (0-3, RBI) drove the runner in with a groundout to short, evening the contest at one.
In the sixth, the Tortugas jumped ahead for good. With nobody on and one out, DH Stuart Fairchild (1-3, R, HR, RBI, SO) blasted the first pitch he saw off the manual scoreboard in left for a go-ahead solo home run. The Seattle native's seventh Florida State League longball pushed Daytona in front, 2-1.
Lakeland managed to threaten in the top of the seventh, as DH Brock Deatherage (2-4, 3B, SO) laced a one-out triple to put the tying run in scoring position. Following a foul pop to third induced by RHP Diomar López (0.2 IP, H), LHP Andy Cox (0.1 IP, SO) entered to try and get the final out. The southpaw struck out 2B Kody Clemens (0-2, 2 BB, SO) on three pitches to close out the contest and his eighth save of the campaign.
RHP Michael Byrne (1.2 IP, H, BB, 2 SO) hurled 1.2 frames of spotless relief to accumulate his third victory of 2019. Despite yielding just two hits, RHP Jared Solomon (4.1 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) took home a no-decision.
Flying Tigers' RHP Garrett Hill (6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 SO) compiled his first career complete game but took home his fourth loss since joining the FSL. 
Bring your party shoes on for the series finale on Sunday, as we celebrate our beloved Shelldon's Birthday. The first 500 fans through the doors that night will take home a special T-Shirt Giveaway in recognition of Volusia County's favorite mascot. To make up for Friday's postponement, Daytona will host their Military Appreciation Night presented by NAPA Auto Parts and the Wall Automotive Group, as well. As a part of the Tortugas' Best Dressed series, players and coaches will sport specialty uniforms that recognize service members from all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The jerseys worn will be auctioned off online throughout the weekend with proceeds going to support the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. In addition, all active duty, veterans, retirees, and reservists will receive one complimentary ticket with their Military ID or proof of service. It will be another Tiny Tugas Night featuring special activities and experiences for all members and Kids Run the Bases following the contest.
The Tortugas Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 5:20 p.m. ET, leading up to the 5:35 p.m. ET start at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Sunday evening's game can be heard on www.daytonatortugas.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
For the finale, Daytona is scheduled to hand the ball to RHP Wendolyn Bautista (1-3, 4.68 ERA). Lakeland is scheduled to counter with RHP Elvin Rodríguez (9-3, 3.12 ERA).
