Tulsa Drillers infielder Miguel Vargas has been named the Los Angeles Dodgers 2021 Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year. Vargas spent a majority of the season in Tulsa and became just the second Drillers player to ever win a league batting title.
Right-handed pitcher Hyun-Il Choi was named the 2021 Branch Rickey Minor League Pitcher of the Year by the Dodgers.
Vargas, a native of Cuba, hit a combined .319 with 23 home runs and 76 runs batted in for the Drillers and the Great Lakes Loons
He spent the first month of the season with the Loons before joining the Drillers on June 6. While with Tulsa, he hit .321 (105-for-327) with 16 doubles, 1 triple, 16 homers and 60 RBI. His .321 average topped all hitters in Double-Central, as he joined Matt Beatty (2017) as the only two Drillers players ever to win league batting titles.
In his first full minor league season, Choi went 8-6 with a 3.55 ERA (42 ER/106.1 IP) and 106 strikeouts in 24 games (11 starts). The Seoul, South Korea native pitched in 24 games for Low-A Rancho Cucamonga before joining Advanced-A Great Lakes and making nine starts for the Loons. Choi could see time with the Drillers in 2022.
