Volpe Walk-Off Home Run Seals Playoff Spot, First Half Championship

Bridgewater, NJ – With a playoff spot on the line, New York Yankees No. 1 prospect Anthony Volpe belted a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th to lead the Somerset Patriots (44-25) to a 6-5 win over the Hartford Yard Goats (43-26) at TD Bank Ballpark

Bridgewater, NJ – With a playoff spot on the line, New York Yankees No. 1 prospect Anthony Volpe belted a walk-off two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th to lead the Somerset Patriots (44-25) to a 6-5 win over the Hartford Yard Goats (43-26) at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday afternoon. The win clinched the Double-A Northeast Division First-Half Championship for Somerset.

Knotted up at zero through six innings, Volpe was hit by pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh before Elijah Dunham lined a bases clearing double off of the left field wall to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead.

In the prior inning, Dunham made two diving catches behind Aroldis Chapman in left field while the game was still scoreless.

The Yard Goats then immediately tied the game 4-4 in the next inning on Willie Maclver and Jimmy Herron RBI doubles, as well as a Niko Decolati RBI single.

Decolati later crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice in the top of the 10th for the fifth run and first lead of the day for Hartford.

Barrett Loseke (6-0) earned the win after he sat down the final two batters of the top of the 10th. Gavin Hollowell (3-2) gave up the two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th to suffer the loss.

Luis Medina dealt six scoreless innings and fanned five batters in a no decision.

Continuing his MLB rehab assignment, Chapman pitched a perfect top of the seventh and whiffed one batter. Overall, Chapman threw two scoreless innings and recorded two strikeouts this weekend.

The 2022 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road with a 7:00 pm game against the Reading Fightin Phils (Philadelphia Phillies) on Tuesday evening at FirstEnergy Stadium.
