The Sox (15-9, 54-37) gave up the tying run in the top of the ninth innings, but were able to bounce back from their bullpen woes to take the victory. Carolina (11-13, 47-45) made a game of it in the late innings, but ultimately fell to their hosts in the first of the three-game set.
