Blue Rocks Cruise To Series Clinching 7-4 Win

The Wilmington Blue Rocks and the Jersey Shore BlueClaws met up once again for the final game of their six game series on Sunday, May 22. Following a walk off win in favor of Wilmington in game five, the Blue Rocks brought even more electricity to game six.

The Blue Rocks took game six by a final score of 7-4, securing the team’s third consecutive series win.

It all started where it left off on Saturday night. Omar Meregildo continued to swing a hot bat after he was the hero in game five, with a first inning RBI single giving the Blue Rocks an early 1-0 lead. Wilmington continued their hot start in the bottom of the second, with an Onix Vega RBI single extending the Blue Rocks lead to 2-0.

The BlueClaws would not go down without a fight, however. The top of the third inning was highlighted by back-to-back blasts for Jersey Shore, one by Nicolas Torres and the other by Uziel Viloria, the first of the year for both player’s to tie the score up at two runs a piece.

The Blue Rocks were quick to respond. Following a leadoff triple by Yasel Antuna, Meregildo continued his tear, crushing his fifth home run of the season to dead center field, allowing the Blue Rocks to retake the lead 4-2.

The BlueClaws did not go away after that, with a fifth inning Johan Rojas long ball cutting the deficit in half, making it a 4-3 ballgame.

This is the moment where the Blue Rocks started to pull away. In the bottom of the sixth, after Onix Vega and Jordy Barely got on base, Darren Baker ripped a double to left center, his second of the day and tenth of the year, extending the lead even further to 6-3.

The Blue Rocks struck again in the bottom of the seventh, with Vega contributing even more, roping a single to right which allowed Meregildo to come around and score another run, adding insurance and making it a 7-3 ballgame.

Jersey Shore was able to respond in the top of the eighth with an RBI single by Casey Martin, but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Rocks ultimately prevailed with a 7-4 win.n

It was a fantastic offensive day for Wilmington, highlighted by Darren Baker going 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI, Omar Meregildo going 3-5 with a homer and 3 RBI, and Onix Vega going 3-4 with 2 RBI.

The Blue Rocks are starting to find their groove with Sunday’s win marking their third consecutive series win, and that streak will be challenged beginning on Tuesday, May 24, when Wilmington travels to Aberdeen to take on the first-place IronBirds.
