Los Worcester Red Sox les rindieron homenaje a varios países de Latinoamérica en el quinto encuentro de la Copa de la Diversión de esta temporada, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador y Panamá, fueron las naciones que, de una manera u otra, fueron representadas la noche del 5 de julio.
La Copa de la Diversión es una iniciativa de las Ligas Menores para promover el deporte y conectar a sus equipos con las comunidades hispano/latinas. Para estos partidos, los equipos adoptan una identidad y personalidad culturalmente relevante para algunos partidos de la temporada.
A pesar de que el clima fue inclemente un día antes, los WooSox abrieron las puertas de Polar Park para recibir a la gente en una doble cartelera de entrada única. Los aficionados tuvieron la oportunidad de disfrutar de una tarde llena de beisbol además de la festiva tradición que se han vuelto los días de Wepas.
DJ Jensky de La Mega Radio arrancó con las festividades al ritmo de la música latina en la DCU Plaza en una fiesta que continuó hasta el diamante con la presentación de las ceremonias prepartido. Arrancando con una danza folclórica del país de Guatemala, las banderas de los países homenajeados hondearon en el plato de home al momento que se entonó el himno nacional de El Salvador a cargo de Cindy Caballero y su versión a capela. También el himno nacional de Estados Unidos fue cantado por Anthony Andrade de Worcester con su segunda presentación de la temporada.
El primer lanzamiento lo protagonizó Hamilton Soriano de El Salvador. Es un latinoamericano de primera generación y vive con su esposa Jackie y su hija Hillary aquí en Worcester. Es un feroz defensor de las comunidades subrepresentadas en la ciudad. Es miembro fundador del comité de una organización sin fines de lucro que proporciona liderazgo y defensa para los profesionales de BIPOC. Ofrece tutoría a estudiantes de UMass Amherst y habla con niños de la Escuela Vocacional de Worcester en febrero. Como asesor financiero de Edward Jones, empodera a sus clientes y a la comunidad latina a través de un proceso integral de planificación financiera.
Para el “Heart of Worcester”, que por lo general se encarga de homenajear a diferentes individuos y organizaciones que trabajan con la comunidad y que son agentes de cambio activos, se le rindio homenaje al Club del libro en español Worcester, fue fundada en abril de 2018. Desde 2022, se reúnen el primer sábado de cada mes en la Biblioteca Pública de Worcester. Promueven la lectura de libros escritos por autores latinos en lengua española.
Su objetivo es promover la lectura en la comunidad hispana de la ciudad, reconectarse con sus raíces y mantener las tradiciones culturales. Hasta la fecha, se tienen más de 30 miembros. Además del Club de Lectura, organizan anualmente la Ceremonia de Izamiento de la Bandera Salvadoreña en el Ayuntamiento de Worcester. Este año, con el apoyo del Consejo Cultural de Masas de Worcester y Shrewsbury, están organizando el Festival Salvadoreño, que se llevará a cabo el sábado 2 de septiembre de 2023 a las 2:30 p.m. en la Plaza de Banderas del Ayuntamiento.
Además, discuten la identidad cultural en el Consulado General de El Salvador en Boston y apoyaron a los beneficiarios del programa de Estatus de Protección Temporal (TPS) con su reinscripción.
En la línea gastronómica, los asistentes pudieron disfrutar de pupusas, un platillo típico de una tortilla gruesa a base de masa de maíz o de arroz rellena con uno o más ingredientes, como queso, chicharrón, frijoles refritos y más.
Los WooSox dividieron la doble cartelera contra los Rochester Red Wings con una derrota 10-8 en el primer juego y una victoria con marcador de 4-2 en el segundo juego a 7 entradas.
