Comstock Park, Mich.– The Great Lakes Loons (46-21) four-game winning streak was shattered by the West Michigan Whitecaps (33-34) who scored 10 runs on 14 hits, victorious 10-0 on an 85-degree Saturday night at LMCU Ballpark.
West Michigan’s Carlos Pena struck out eight Loons across 5.2 innings. The Loons left seven on base, with the left-hander on the mound. The best chance to score came in the second inning. Chris Alleyne and Frank Rodriguez singled, with Jake Vogel reaching on a walk. An eight-pitch battle led to an inning-ending strikeout of Taylor Young. Young did have two of the seven Great Lakes hits.
The Whitecaps tallied two runs on Loons starter Hyun-il Choi. A walk and two singles loaded the bases with no outs. Carlos Mendoza drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to left field. Roberto Campos singled home a second run.
Choi stranded two in the third, as did Robbie Peto in his first inning of work in the fourth. The right-hander needed just seven pitches for a 1-2-3 fifth. Two West Michigan doubles started the sixth. Luis Santana sliced a ball to left-center field, Austin Murr put it towards an identical spot which scored Santana. A one-out Roberto Campos base knock pushed across Murr, Campos fourth hit of the game.
Peto finished on a positive note, tossing a scoreless seventh. The inning saw two of the 24-year-old’s four strikeouts.
The Whitecaps distanced themselves with a six-run eighth inning, aided by three Great Lakes errors. Austin Murr singled, stole second base, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a wild pitch.
Josh Crouch added two on an RBI single, Izaac Pacheco had an RBI double, and a fielding misplay in left field scored two more. Carlos De Los Santos got the first two outs, Reinaldo De Paula the last one. The Loons went down 1-2-3 in the ninth, in total they stranded eight on base.
Great Lakes and West Michigan play the series finale tomorrow Sunday, June 25th. The first pitch is at 2:05 p.m.
