ASHEVILLE- The Yacumamas de Asheville completed a stunning six-game sweep of the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 10-9 win on Sunday afternoon. All six wins in the series were by two runs or less. The Yacumamas have won seven in a row overall and the team is receiving contributions across the board.
Today the deciding blow was a Jacob Melton two-run Home Run in the bottom of the eighth that turned a 9-8 deficit into a 10-9 lead. Ryan Clifford hit two Home Runs and Logan Cerny belted a solo blast as well. Ryan Wrobleski went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Tim Borden II had a clutch two-out RBI single late in the game.
Asheville plated the first two runs of the contest before the back and forth began. Greensboro answered with the game’s next three runs to take a 3-2 lead. Clifford’s first Home Run tied the game and the Yacumamas then reeled off five more to take an 8-3 advantage.
The visitors rallied back with a five-run seventh inning and a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth recaptured the lead; however, Melton’s 431-foot Home Run to centerfield in the bottom of the eighth proved to be the difference.
Deylen Miley worked a season-high five innings and allowed only two earned runs. Valente Bellozo pitched the final four frames and picked up the win despite surrendering the lead. Bellozo pitched a perfect top of the ninth.
Up next for Asheville is a six-game set against the Hickory Crawdads. Game One is scheduled for Tuesday night at 6:00pm ET.
