JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Biloxi Shuckers (61-40, 20-11 2nd half) were unable to score the tying runs following a rain delay in the ninth inning on Tuesday at the Baseball Ground of Jacksonville and saw their ten-game winning streak end with a 2-0 defeat to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (48-53, 19-12 2nd half). Silenced by strong starting pitching, the Shuckers offense mustered their best offensive threat in their final at bat until Mother Nature took effect.
Down 2-0, Bruce Caldwell and Patrick Leonard singled off Dylan Lee with one out in the ninth to put the tying runs aboard. Dillon Thomas worked a 1-1 count and before the next pitch was thrown, rain poured down and delayed action for 38 minutes. Following the delay, Tommy Eveld (S, 3) took over on the mound and struck out Thomas along with Jake Gatewood to close the game.
Biloxi managed just two hits across the first seven innings against Sixto Sanchez (W, 6-4), who struck out nine Shuckers without surrendering a walk. Drew Rasmussen showed similar success on the mound over his three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Justin Twine broke up the scoreless tie with an RBI double in the sixth inning against Cameron Roegner (L, 3-4), who struck out three and allowed just two hits over three innings. J.C. Millan added an insurance run with a solo homer against Marcos Diplan in the seventh inning.
The loss is the first for Biloxi since July 9th and puts an end to the franchise-best ten-game winning streak.
The Shuckers continue the series in Jacksonville on Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 pm ct. The Shuckers will send RHP Alec Bettinger (4-5, 3.64) to the mound and the Jumbo Shrimp will throw RHP Kolton Mahoney (3-0, 3.04).
