(Burlington, IA) - The Burlington Bees (56-71) saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with a 7-2 loss to the Clinton LumberKings (57-68) on Tuesday night at Community Field.
The Bees opened the game with three straight hits off Clinton starter Ljay Newsome. Jonah Todd started the game with a single to center but was caught stealing. Leonardo Rivas then lined a single to center, replacing Todd at first base. Richie Fecteau then gave the Bees the lead by blasting a two-run home run to right, putting the Bees on top, 2-0.
That would be the last time the Bees would score as the Clinton LumberKings went on to score the next seven runs of the game. Clinton tied it in the fourth inning. Nick Zammarelli III singled to start the inning and then moved to second on an error. After a ground out, Nick Thurman singled to left, putting runners at the corners with one out. After Thurman stole second base, Chris Rodriguez struck out Louis Boyd for the second out of the inning. Dimas Ojeda then lined a single to center, tying the game at two.
Clinton took the lead in the sixth inning. Jhombeyker Morales doubled to left to lead off the inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, Billy Cooke gave Clinton the lead by dropping a single into center, scoring both Morales and Boyd, making the score 4-2. Clinton added three more runs in the seventh inning on a bases loaded walk to Nick Thurman and a RBI single by Louis Boyd, capped off by a wild pitch scoring the seventh run of the night as the Bees lost the series opener, 7-2.
Clinton starter Ljay Newsome (8-8) earned the win while Bees' reliever Justin Kelly (2-3) was charged with the loss and Jeffeson Medina (3) earned the save. The Bees and the LumberKings will continue to series on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Community Field as Elvin Rodriguez will make his Burlington Bees' debut against Steven Ridings for Clinton.
