Wood Ducks Fail to Support Martin's Strong Start in Loss to Mudcats

ZEBULON, NC - A quality start from Brett Martin did not receive the run support it required as the Mudcats (19-19, 55-51) widened the game late over the Wood Ducks (18-20, 42-65) 5-0. Martin struck out seven while allowing one earned run during six innings of work.

Martin managed to quell early troubles in the first three innings by leaving four runners stranded. A two-run double by Jose Cuas put the Mudcats ahead in the second, but Martin would only allow three baserunners for the final 12 outs.
Offensively, the Wood Ducks could not muster more than four hits against the tandem unit of Trey Supak and Conor Harber. The last time the Woodies faced the pairing, they also could only manage four runs.
In the fourth, both starters had masterful innings - striking out the side. Supak would finish with four strikeouts on the evening in his third win of the year. For Martin, it was the first time he completed six innings since April.
A three-run seventh for the Mudcats held the Wood Ducks out of the game of for the final two frames. Despite the runs allowed, Vasquez only walked one batter while striking out four.
The Wood Ducks finish the month of July with a 13-17 record and find themselves seven games back of Buies Creek slotting in third place in the second half race.
