Jupiter, FL - Jake Woodford tossed seven one-run, four-hit innings on the way to a Palm Beach Cardinals (23-20) 2-1 win over the Florida Fire Frogs (19-25). He struck out six and walked two batter as well.
The Fire Frogs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as Anfernee Seymour singled to lead off the game and stole second with one out. Tyler Neslony singled in Seymour to give the Fire Frogs the 1-0 lead.
Florida threatened again in the top of the sixth as Omar Obregon hit a double to left and got to third on a wild throw by Thomas Spitz to begin the sixth. With the infield playing in, Woodford got a ground ball to Chris Chinea holding Obregon at third. Woodford struck out Austin Riley and Braxton Davidson to end the threat and strand Obregon at third and keep it a 1-0 game.
The Cardinals then took the lead in the bottom half of the frame. Randy Arozarena led off the inning with a single and Edmundo Sosa tried to bunt him over but it went right back to the pitcher getting Arozarena out at second. Chinea then doubled down the right field line to put runners at second and third with one out. Casey Turgeon hit a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game. Leobaldo Pina came to the plate with two outs and hit a ball to the third baseman, Obregon who threw it wide of the first baseman allowing Chinea to score and take the 2-1 lead.
Ross Vance came in to pitch the top of the eighth and gave up a ground rule double to Carlos Martínez to start the inning. Seymour advanced Martinez on a sacrifice bunt. Vance then struggled to find the strike zone as he walked the bases loaded. Brennan Leitao came into the bases loaded situation and got Riley to pop out on an infield fly rule and struck out Davidson to preserve the one-run lead.
Florida made it interesting in the eighth as Ray-Patrick Didder hit a one out double and got to third on a hard hit single to left off the bat of Wigberto Nevarez. Leitao got pinch hitter, Jonathan Morales to ground into a double play to get his first save of the season and a Cardinals' 2-1 lead.
Luke Dykstra recorded two singles and one double in the victory.
