The Woodpeckers ended the seven game tilt at Segra Stadium on a high note, holding the Keys to just one score in the 7-1 Thursday night win. The Fayetteville pitching staff combined for thirteen strikeouts and the offense blasted four solo home runs to secure the sweep of Frederick for the second time this year.
For the first time in this series, the Woodpeckers did not score in the first inning. However the Fayetteville offense got things started in the bottom of the second. Jonathan Arauz singled off of Keys starter Cameron Bishop to bring home Jacob Meyers. Meyers had extended his hit streak earlier in the inning to ten straight games, the longest in Woodpeckers history. Fayetteville entered the bottom of the third up 1-0, Bryan De La Cruz quickly changed that with a lead-off solo shot. The homer was the second of the year for the Woodpeckers' outfielder. One batter later, Seth Beer copied De La Cruz with a solo bomb of his own to make it 3-0. That's tied for a team-high four home runs on the season for Beer.
After a scoreless 4th the Woodpeckers tacked on two more runs. Seth Beer earned back-to-back RBIs in back-to-back at bats with a sacrifice fly that sent Bryan De La Cruz across home plate. Later in the inning, Jake Adams added an RBI of his own on a ground ball to center field. Michael Papierski ran home on the Adams single and the Woodpeckers built a five run lead after five innings. Jake Adams continued his stellar day going into the seventh. The Fayetteville slugger scorched a ball 416 feet for his first homer since April 14th and the Woodpeckers seventh unanswered run.
Enoli Paredes put on a show as the starter for Fayetteville, pitching 5.1 innings and not allowing a run or a hit. The right-handed hurler walked two and struck out seven. Jacob Billingsley relieved Paredes on the mound debuting in a Woodpeckers jersey in impressive fashion. The recent move up from Quad Cities struck out the first five batters he faced, including all the Keys that came to the plate in the 7th.
Frederick finally mustered up some offense in the top of the eighth. Lead-off hitter Mason McCoy drew an error from Fayetteville first baseman Jake Adams to score Cole Billingsley. That was the lone run of the day for the Keys who only managed two hits total against Fayetteville pitchers. Jacob Meyers added another run just for fun with a bottom of the eighth dinger, his first of the year. Meyers was red-hot today going 3-4 from the plate. The long-ball from the Nebraska product was the last tally of the day and cemented the 7-1 Woodpeckers win.
The victory caps of a successful home stand at Segra Stadium in which the Woodpeckers went 5-2 against opponents. That includes a double header sweep against the Carolina Mudcats and a series sweep of the Frederick Keys. Up next Fayetteville hits the road traveling to battle the Down East Wood Ducks tomorrow. First pitch is set for 7:00pm.
