KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - (June 16, 2017) Multi-RBI games from Seby Zavala and Brandon Dulin helped lift the Kannapolis Intimidators over the West Virginia Power 8-2 on Friday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (38-28) improved its winning streak to five consecutive games, a new season high, and maintained its 1.0 game lead atop the South Atlantic League's Northern Division First Half Standings with two games left to play.
Zavala finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI. Dulin also ended the evening 2-for-4 with his fifth home run in three days, while driving in three. For both Dulin and Zavala Friday night's blasts marked their 12th of the season, a team high.
Bernardo Flores (7-4) recorded his sixth quality start of the year and earned the win, tossing six innings and allowing two runs while striking out six and not walking a batter. West Virginia starter James Marvel (2-5) took the loss exiting after 3.2 innings due to injury, and allowing five runs on six hits while fanning two.
The two sides remained in a scoreless game into the fourth inning when in the bottom of the frame the Intimidators exploded for five runs. With one on and one out, Jameson Fisher singled home Mitch Roman to give Kannapolis the lead. Two batters later Dulin brought home Fisher with a single to make it 2-0. Later in the frame Zavala's 401-foot three-run homer to left-center field made it 5-0.
In the bottom of the 5th inning Kannapolis added to its lead as Dulin's two-run shot to right field made it a 7-2 game. The next batter, Zach Remillard, singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. He scored when Zavala brought him home on a double to centerfield.
The Power scored its only runs of the game in the top of the 5th inning when Alexis Bastardo brought home two on a double to center.
Kannapolis stands one game ahead of Lakewood (38-30) in the standings and would clinch the division with a win tomorrow per the winning percentage tiebreaker.
The Intimidators continue their homestand with the second game of the three-game series against the Power on Saturday when Kannapolis sends to the mound RHP Blake Hickman (0-0, 1.93 ERA) against West Virginia LHP Oddy Nunez (2-4, 3.35 ERA) at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. Saturday features the second annual Disney Vacation Giveaway Night, where one lucky fan will win a $2,500 vacation to the Magic Kingdom.
