JUPITER, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals (49-36, 12-7) fell behind big and early to the Clearwater Threshers (50-36, 7-13) as the Beach Birds fell by a final score of 6-2 on Saturday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Clearwater exploded early in the ballgame in the top of the first inning off of Palm Beach starting pitcher Chen-Wei Lin (L, 5-5). Raylin Heredia and Devin Saltiban hit back-to-back doubles to put the Threshers on top 1-0. Later in the frame with the bases loaded, Devin Gonzalez hit a grand slam, his second home run of the series and season, to give the Threshers a commanding 5-0 lead. In the very next inning, Saltiban launched a solo home run, his 11th of the season, to left field to put Clearwater ahead by a 6-0 score.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning off of Clearwater starter Jordan Fowler on their first hit of the game. With Jose Suarez at first base after a one-out walk, Brayden Jobert smacked a two-run home run to right field, his fifth of the season, to cut the deficit to just 6-2.
However, after the second inning, both pitching staffs settled into the ballgame and neither team would allow a run the rest of the game as the Cardinals fell to the Threshers by a 6-2 final score on Saturday night. Lin finished with a season-high six earned runs allowed and also surrendered his first two home runs of 2024. Braydon Tucker (W, 5-2) came out of the Threshers' bullpen and tossed six scoreless and hitless innings to pick up the win for Clearwater.
Palm Beach relief pitchers Angel Cuenca, Ettore Giulianelli, and Zack Showalter combined for five scoreless innings and nine strikeouts out of the bullpen. Anyelo Encarnacion and Ross Friedrick were the only other Cardinals' hitters to have a hit in the game which were both singles.
The series finale between Palm Beach and Clearwater will take place on Sunday, July 14th with first pitch scheduled for noon. Hunter Kublick (2-1. 4.84 ERA) is scheduled to start on the mound for the Cardinals to try and get Palm Beach's 50th win and a series victory in the final game before the All-Star break across MiLB and MLB.
