Cardinals Drop Series Opener to Blue Jays 3-1 Tuesday Night

JUPITER, FL - After a one hour and twenty seven minute rain delay in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Palm Beach Cardinals (30-22) dropped the series opener to the Dunedin Blue Jays (26-26) by a final score of 3-1 on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With the Jupiter Hammerheads losing to Lakeland, the Cardinals maintain their one-game lead for first place in the FSL East Division.

After two scoreless innings, it was Palm Beach that crossed home plate first in the ballgame. In the bottom of the third inning, Lizandro Espinoza walked and later stole second base. With two outs, Sammy Hernandez drove in Espinoza on an RBI single to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead after three innings.

However, the Blue Jays provided themselves with an immediate response against Palm Beach starting pitcher Gerardo Salas (L, 2-3). With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Damiano Palmegiani launched a solo home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1. In the very next inning, Dunedin took the lead for good with some insurance. With two outs, Nicolas Deschamps walked and then Bryce Arnold and Jean Joseph hit back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.

Palm Beach had opportunities on offense to get some more runs but left six men on base in the final four innings and ultimately fell to Dunedin by a 3-1 final score.

Hernandez and Jose Cordoba each had two hits as both platers combined for half of the Cardinals' eight hits in the game. Augusto Calderon tossed two perfect innings out of the bullpen and recorded two strikeouts.

Game two of the six-game series continues on Wednesday, June 5th with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Darlin Saladin (2-0, 1.98 ERA) is scheduled to make the start on the mound for Palm Beach. Click here to purchase your tickets.
