JUPITER, FL – In the series-opening game of another edition of the “Dual of the Dean” series, the Palm Beach Cardinals (66-41, 29-12) fell short against the Jupiter Hammerheads (57-50, 21-20) by a final score of 3-1 on Tuesday evening at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Palm Beach left 13 men on base and went just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Hammerheads got right to work as Wilking Rodriguez (L, 0-1) made the start on the mound for Palm Beach as part of a rehab assignment from Triple-A Memphis. Rodriguez hit Jake DeLeo on the helmet to begin the ballgame and DeLeo promptly stole second and third base. Later in the frame with two outs off of new Cardinal pitcher Jason Savacool, Jacob Jenkins-Cowart hit an RBI double to give Jupiter the early 1-0 lead.

The 1-0 score remained until the top of the fifth inning. Connor Caskenette led off the frame with a double and later came around to score on a wild pitch by Savacool which extended the Jupiter lead to 2-0.

After the top of the fifth inning, both pitching staffs settled the game down until the top of the eighth inning. With Nolan Sparks out for his second inning of relief for the Cardinals and two outs, Yiddi Cappe grounded into a fielder’s choice but a throwing error by Palm Beach third baseman Cade McGee allowed DeLeo to score from first base which extended the Jupiter lead to 3-0.

The Cardinals finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Ross Friedrick hit a sacrifice fly to prevent the shutout and cut the deficit to 3-1. For Friedrick, it was his team-leading 40th RBI of the season.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cardinals brought the winning run to the plate but were unable to score as Palm Beach dropped the series opener to Jupiter by the 3-1 final score on Tuesday evening.

On offense, Ian Petrutz led the Beach Birds by going 2-for-3 with two walks, reaching base safely four times out of the leadoff spot in the order.

The Cardinals and Hammerheads continue the series with game two on Wednesday, August 14th with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. for another “Silver Sluggers” Wednesday at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Click here to purchase your tickets.
