JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (61-39, 24-10) defeated the Bradenton Marauders (41-61, 12-24) by a final score of 5-4 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Palm Beach ends the home series with five-straight wins and maintains its first-place position in the FSL East Division by five games in the second half of the season.

Palm Beach got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning off of Bradenton starting pitcher Clevari Tejada. After Christian Martin led off being hit by a pitch, he came around to score on an RBI fielder’s choice by Ryan Campos to give the Cardinals the early 1-0 lead.

Bradenton answered right back in the top of the second inning off of Palm Beach starting pitcher Augusto Calderon as Miguel Sosa drove in Justin Miknis on an RBI double to quickly tie the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the third inning, Martin led off with a walk and later found himself at third base as Campos drove him in on an RBI groundout to give Palm Beach the lead back at 2-1. Two innings later in the bottom of the fifth off of Bradenton relief pitcher Peyton Stumbo, Martin recorded his first professional hit with a leadoff single. Two batters later, Ian Petrutz hit an RBI single to left field to score Martin and extend the Palm Beach lead to 3-1.

Calderon finished his first start of the season with four innings pitched, which tied a season-high, and allowed just one run on three hits while earning five strikeouts in a no-decision. Angel Cuenca was the first Cardinal out of the bullpen. After a scoreless top of the fifth inning, Cuenca ran into some trouble in the sixth. With two outs, the Marauders recorded three consecutive hits including an RBI double by Jhonny Severino and an RBI single by Miknis which tied the ballgame at 3-3.

Palm Beach needed to get the runs back and did so in the bottom of the seventh inning. Jon Jon Gazdar led off the frame with a single which was his first professional hit. Two batters later, Chase Adkison launched his third home run of the season, a two-run home run down the left field line, which gave the Cardinals a 5-3 lead.

After Nolan Sparks (W, 2-0) tossed a scoreless top of the seventh inning and recorded his first career strikeout, Henry Gomez (Sv, 9) was tasked with the final two innings on the mound for Palm Beach. Gomez allowed an RBI single to Yordany De Los Santos in the top of the ninth inning but allowed no further damage as the Cardinals held on for the 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon. Gomez has nine saves in 2024 as he takes over the league lead in that category.

Petrutz finished his first week of professional ball by going 10-for-19 in six games with six RBIS and five runs scored as he makes his case to earn FSL Player of the Week honors. Martin and Gazdar recorded their first career hits in the ballgame with Martin leading the way with three runs scored.

The Cardinals will hit the road beginning on Tuesday, August 6th when they visit the Dunedin Blue Jays. Palm Beach went 2-4 at home against Dunedin between June 4-9. The Cardinals return to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium for another edition of the “Dual of the Dean” to host the Jupiter Hammerheads on August 13-18.
