JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (77-46, 40-17) have claimed both halves of the 2024 regular season as they won the FSL East Division with a 4-1 victory over the Daytona Tortugas (61-61, 30-26) on Friday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. The Tortugas have a four-game lead over the Jupiter Hammerheads for the final playoff berth to determine who the Cardinals face in the first round of the playoffs.

For the second consecutive game, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Ian Petrutz hit a one-out single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Two batters later with two outs, Jose Suarez drove in Petrutz on an RBI single to give Palm Beach the early 1-0 lead.

Palm Beach starting pitcher Gerardo Salas (W, 8-5) was in total control through his first four innings but ran into a little bit of trouble in the fifth. With one out, Jack Moss and Malvin Valdez hit back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. With Ryan McCrystal at the plate, Salas successfully picked off Valdez, however, Moss came into score while Valdez was caught in a rundown and the Tortugas tied the game at 1-1.

Palm Beach provided an immediate response in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, Cade McGee launched his first career professional home run, a solo home run to left field, which put the Cardinals back on top with a 2-1 lead.

Salas finished with five innings pitched and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out six hitters and left as the pitcher of record. Angel Cuenca (H, 1) was the first Cardinal out of the bullpen and tossed three scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts.

Palm Beach added some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out and two runners on base, JJ Wetherholt hit an RBI single to score Bryce Madron from second base. Suarez added his second RBI of the night on a groundout to second base and that gave the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.

Luis Gastelum (Sv, 7) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season as the Cardinals won the game 4-1 and claimed their 40th win and the second half division title. Daytona still leads the regular season series 13-12 over Palm Beach with two games to go in the series this weekend.

Suarez finished with two RBIs for the second straight game and Petrutz led the game with two runs scored in a 2-for-3 day at the plate.
