JUPITER, FL – After starting the evening with a one hour and 55-minute rain delay, the Palm Beach Cardinals (78-46, 41-17) scored 12 unanswered runs to defeat the Daytona Tortugas (61-62, 30-27) by a final score of 12-1 on Saturday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With the win, Palm Beach earned the series victory and improve to 13-13 against Daytona with the series finale coming up tomorrow. The Cardinals also finish with a 21-7 record for the month of August which is the best in the Florida State League.

For the first time since game one in Wednesday’s double-header, the Tortugas scored the first run of the game. In the top of the third inning with two outs, the Tortugas had runners at the corners with Ariel Almonte at the plate and he drove in Yerlin Confidan on an RBI fielder’s choice which gave Daytona a 1-0 lead.

For the first three innings, the Cardinals did not get a hit off of Daytona starting pitcher Adam Serwinowski who finished with three shutout innings in his start.

The Cardinals answered back two innings later in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Daytona relief pitcher Adrian Herrera. Jose Cordoba reached on a catcher’s interference to start the frame and advanced to third base on a groundout. With one out, Ross Friedrick hit a sacrifice fly to right field which tied the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Beach Bird bats exploded for seven runs on six hits highlighted by a two-RBI double by Cordoba, a two-RBI single by Jose Suarez, an RBI double by Jon Jon Gazdar, and capped by a two-run home run by Anyelo Encarnacion to give the Palm Beach an 8-1 lead. The seven runs scored in the inning ties the highest-scoring inning this season when the Cardinals also scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning back on May 16th against St. Lucie. For Encarnacion, it was his first home run as a member of the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Palm Beach added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-RBI by Suarez and also two runs in the bottom of the seventh with a two-RBI double by Lizandro Espinoza which gave the Cardinals a 12-1 lead.

Meanwhile, Leonel Sequera (W, 1-0) was solid on the mound in his fifth start for Palm Beach and finished with six innings, one run allowed on four hits while tallying five strikeouts. It is the third time that Sequera has tossed at least six innings in a start for Palm Beach. Michael Watson and Randel Clemente combined for three scoreless innings and six strikeouts out of the Cardinals' bullpen to slam the door on a 12-1 victory on Saturday night.

Suarez led the offense after he went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, a run scored, and four RBIs. Gazdar had his best offensive game so far in his young professional career with a 3-for-5 day at the plate with a triple, two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI.
