Palm Beach Falls Late to Jupiter 4-2 to Even Series

JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (68-42, 31-13) dropped game four of a six-game series to the Jupiter Hammerheads (58-52, 22-22) by a final score of 4-2 on Friday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium thanks to a three-run home run by Carter Johnson in the top of the eighth inning. This week’s series is now tied 2-2 with Palm Beach still holding the overall season series record of 12-7.
Just like the first three games of the series, the game started as an early pitchers’ duel between Palm Beach starting pitcher Chen-Wei Lin and Jupiter starter Jake Brooks.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Christian Martin hit a single and advanced to second base on a groundout. Then, JJ Wetherholt ripped a single up the middle of the infield to score Martin and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The score remained until the top of the sixth inning. Lin had retired six batters in a row with two outs in the frame. However, the Hammerheads hit three consecutive singles, including an RBI single by Garret Forrester, to tie the ballgame at 1-1.
Lin received a no-decision after tossing six innings and allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five batters. He also became the second pitcher in the Florida State League to reach 100 innings and fifth pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts on the season.
Brooks would counter Lin with six innings of his own in a no-decision and allowed just one run as Brooks also reached the 100-inning mark becoming the first pitcher in the FSL to do so. It was the bullpen that would decide the
The Cardinals would go back on top in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lizandro Espinoza hit a single with one out and advanced to second base on an error. Two batters later, Ryan Campos drove in Espinoza on an RBI single to give Palm Beach a 2-1 lead.
Randel Clemente (L, 3-2) struck out the side in order in the top of the seventh inning, but it was his second inning of relief in the top of the eighth that changed the direction of the ballgame. For Jupiter, Jake DeLeo led off with a double and Fenwick Trimble followed up with a walk. Then, Johnson launched his first professional home run, a three-run blast to right field, to put Jupiter on top by a 4-2 score.
Palm Beach left 10 men on base and had no further answers in the last two innings as the Cardinals fell to the Hammerheads by the 4-2 final score on Friday night.
Wetherholt led the way offensively for Palm Beach by going 4-for-5 with an RBI for his first professional four-hit game. Campos went 2-for-5 with an RBI as the only other multi-hit performer for the Cardinals.
With the series tied at 2-2, game five of the six-game series between Palm Beach and Jupiter takes place on Saturday, August 17th with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
