Palm Beach Shut Out by Daytona 2-0 in Series Opener

JUPITER, FL – The Palm Beach Cardinals (74-45, 37-16) were shut out by the Daytona Tortugas (60-58, 29-23) by a final score of 2-0 in the series opener on Tuesday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. It is the seventh shutout loss of the season for Palm Beach and the fourth at the hands of Daytona.
The Tortugas got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning. With one out, Sammy Stafura hit a single to center field and then advanced to third base on a throwing error by Cardinals starting pitcher Sem Robberse (L, 0-1). With Stafura at third Peyton Stovall drove him in on an RBI single to give Daytona a 1-0 lead.
Robberse finished his third rehab start with three innings pitched and the one earned run allowed along with three strikeouts. Hunter Kublick was the first Cardinal out of the bullpen and he proceeded to throw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
For Daytona, starting pitcher David Lorduy went three scoreless innings with just one hit allowed while striking out five batters. Dualvert Gutierrez (W, 5-0) kept the Cardinals’ offense in check with four scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Tortugas added one more run for insurance in the top of the sixth inning off of new Palm Beach pitcher Augusto Calderon. Daytona loaded the bases with one out and Jack Moss hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ricardo Cabrera to make it a 2-0 deficit for Palm Beach.
The Cardinals finished with just four hits and left five runners on base and were shutout by the 2-0 final score on Tuesday night.
Joshua Baez led the Cardinals’ offense after he went 2-for-3 at the plate. Bryce Madron and Ian Petrutz had the other two Palm Beach hits.
Palm Beach and Daytona face off in a double header on Wednesday, August 28th with first pitch for game one scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Game two begins approximately 30 minutes following game one and the Tortugas will be the home team to make up for a rainout back in Daytona on July 20th. It is a single admission double header.
