The Palm Beach Cardinals (15-10) snapped their season long three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the Daytona Tortugas (15-10) on Friday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With the win, the Cardinals also ended the Tortugas' five-game win streak as both teams go into a tie for second place in the FSL East Division.

Tonight, it was the Cardinals who would strike first in the ballgame. In the bottom of the first inning, Trey Paige led off with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. With one out, Miguel Villarroel drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single making it a 1-0 Palm Beach Lead. After a scoreless second and top of the third innings, the Cardinals added another run to their day with another RBI single from Villarroel extending the Palm Beach lead to 2-0.

In the meantime, Cardinals starting pitcher Quinn Mathews (W, 3-0) was cruising through the first six innings of the night.

In the top of the seventh inning, Daytona finally broke through with their first run of the ballgame. With two runners and one out, Mathews was lifted from the ballgame in what was his longest career outing. Later with two outs, Johnny Ascanio drove in the first run for Daytona on an RBI single to make it 2-1.

The game felt tight in the seventh and eighth innings but Henry Gomez and Zack Showalter (Sv, 1) came out of the Palm Beach bullpen and held the Tortugas in check offensively. The Cardinals would explode offensively in the bottom of the eighth. The Cardinals sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs, which matched the total number of runs scored in every other inning in the series to this point. The frame was highlighted with an RBI double for Luis Pino and an RBI double by Villarroel and the Cardinals extended their lead to 7-1.

Showalter would secure the victory with his first save of the season and hold onto the 7-1 victory. With the win, Palm Beach and Daytona are tied for second place in the east division going into Saturday.

Mathews finished his day with 6 1/3 innings pitched with one run allowed on three hits and struck out six hitters. For Mathews, it was only the second earned run he has allowed in 2024. Villarroel led all hitters by going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Chase Adkison went 2-for-3 at the plate with a hit by pitch. Paige scored a game-high three runs and went 1-for-3 with a double and two walks, including an RBI walk in the bottom of the eighth.

Palm Beach and Daytona are back at it for game five of the homestand on Saturday, May 4th with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium as the Cardinals attempt to salvage the series. It is South Florida PBS Night at the ballpark as well as another Kids Club Saturday at the ballpark. Click here to purchase your tickets. Click here to become a member of Kids Club.
