July 11, 2024

JUPITER, FL - In a day that started with the completion of a suspended game, the Palm Beach Cardinals (48-35, 11-6) finished with a double-header split of the Clearwater Threshers (49-35, 6-12) with a walk-off win of 5-4 in eight innings in game one and a 7-4 loss in seven

JUPITER, FL - In a day that started with the completion of a suspended game, the Palm Beach Cardinals (48-35, 11-6) finished with a double-header split of the Clearwater Threshers (49-35, 6-12) with a walk-off win of 5-4 in eight innings in game one and a 7-4 loss in seven innings in game two on Thursday night at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. With the loss in game two, the Cardinals' four-game win streak was snapped while Clearwater's four-game losing streak was also snapped.

GAME ONE

The first game featured the continuation of Wednesday night's suspended game which was called in the top of the fifth inning with two outs and the Cardinals leading by a 4-3 score.

Clearwater would resume scoring in the top of the sixth inning when Diego Gonzalez hit an RBI infield single to score Pierce Bennett to tie the game at 4-4 (Gonzalez hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning prior to the game being suspended).

The Cardinals could not come up with the winning run in the seventh so the game needed extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning, Angel Cuenca (W, 2-0) came out of the Palm Beach bullpen and did not allow the placed-runner to score. In the bottom of the frame, Trey Paige was the placed-runner at second base. Chase Adkison moved Paige to third base on a sacrifice bunt. Chase Davis came up to the plate and drove in Paige on a sacrifice fly to give the Cardinals a 5-4 walk-off victory to take the second game of the series.

Davis became the sixth different Cardinal with a walk-off in six walk-off wins this season for Palm Beach. Adkison also had a two-RBI single and Kade Kretzschmar had a two-RBI triple in the first part of the game.

GAME TWO

Game two on Thursday was the scheduled Thursday game which became a seven-inning, back-and-forth contest. Clearwater would score the first run for the first time in the series when Devin Saltiban hit a solo home run off of Palm Beach starting pitcher Ixan Henderson in the top of the first inning which quickly put the Threshers on top 1-0.

Palm Beach provided an immediate response in the bottom of the frame when Adkison hit a solo home run, his second of the season, to tie the game at 1-1.

After a scoreless second inning, Clearwater got back to work on offense in the top of the third inning. With runners at first and third base, Henderson tried to pick off Saltiban at first but Cardinals' first-baseman Ross Friedrick had the baseball bounce off of his glove for an error allowing the runner to score from third base and Clearwater to take a 2-1 lead.

Later, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Palm Beach got the runs back and then some. With the bases loaded and no outs, Sammy Hernandez scored on a wild pitch which tied the game 2-2. Friedrick followed that with an RBI single to score Anyelo Encarnacion and in the same play a throwing error was made allowing Brayden Jobert to score which gave Palm Beach the lead at 4-2.

However, in a back-and-forth affair, Clearwater eventually took the lead back and back for good. In the top of the fifth inning, Augusto Calderon (L, 1-5) surrendered a solo home run to Dakota Kotowski which put the Threshers on top 5-4. In the top of the seventh inning, Zack Showalter allowed an additional two runs which gave Clearwater a 7-4 lead. The Cardinals had no further answer on offense as they fell to Clearwater 7-4 in seven innings.

As the All-Star break approaches, the Cardinals and Threshers continue the series with game four of six on Friday, July 12th with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. for Splash Day at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. Jose Davila (2-5, 5.05 ERA) is projected to start on the mound for Palm Beach. Click here to purchase tickets for the game.
