Many of his friends, along with Blue Wahoos fans now living elsewhere, have delivered a steady supply of messages into team president Jonathan Griffith’s phone.
The inquiries are the same.
“When can I buy tickets to the FSU-Auburn (baseball) games?”
The answer is now.
Public sale of tickets begin on Thursday morning for the Oct. 12 exhibition doubleheader between Florida State and Auburn at Blue Wahoos Stadium. It is the first time the Seminoles, fresh off their run into the final four of the recent Men’s College World Series, have played in Pensacola.
“The interest has been great and we’re hoping for a big day, sellout crowd and just a great atmosphere,” said Griffith, who joined with Pensacola mayor D.C. Reeves, an FSU graduate, to help arrange the matchup.
Nearly 1,000 tickets have already been claimed by Blue Wahoos season-ticket holders. They had the option of early purchase for the same seats they have for Blue Wahoos home games, along with additional seats if they chose.
That leaves approximately 4,000 tickets remaining, including some availability in the third-level Hancock-Whitney Club pavilion where a $60 ticket includes a full buffet, soft drinks and option for alcoholic drink purchases.
The first game Oct. 12 will begin at 12 p.m. Both games are seven innings. These games do not count on either team’s next season record.
Both FSU and Auburn are not playing football games on Oct. 12. With that in mind, the Blue Wahoos are seeking a tailgate experience in the main parking lot hours before the first game begins.
“We want to make this a big-time college event, not just a baseball game,” Griffith said.
For an additional parking fee, campers will be permitted in the parking lot. The idea is for both teams’ fan bases to come to the ballpark and tailgate on the bayfront.
“This is something when I started (as Pensacola mayor), just always wondered what do we have to do to get Florida State (baseball) over here,” Reeves said. “It really started organically just like that.”
The Seminoles produced a dramatic turnaround in 2024 under second-year coach Link Jarrett, 52, a former Tallahassee prep star who then helped FSU advance to three College World Series appearances in four seasons, while playing as infielder for legendary coach Mike Martin Sr.
Following a professional career, Jarrett became a coach. As a head coach Jarrett, took Notre Dame to the CWS in 2022, prior to getting named the Seminoles head coach. After enduring a losing season in 2023, the first in school history, Jarrett guided FSU to a 49-17 record, that included a pair of wins in the CWS, before falling to eventual national champion Tennessee in the semifinal round.
Auburn and FSU have a baseball series history that began 70 years ago in 1954, not long after FSU was founded as a university. The teams have met 120 times in official games. The last meeting was in 2022 at an NCAA regional at Auburn.
“What I hope is for both of these programs, this (Oct. 12 exhibition doubleheader) is just the start,” Reeves said. “I’m always confident when someone flies into Pensacola, whether they meet the mayor or they come play a game here, we have a lot to sell. So, I hope it’s not just about this one game.
“To showcase the potential that we have with two major programs is great for the city of Pensacola and show what we could. You think about what the future could be… there’s no reason these two teams couldn’t play in the regular season here.
“I think this such a good, big advertisement of what we could do.”
