Chiefs Fall 9-8 in Extras Monday

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs led by as many as five runs but couldn't close out their 10^th straight victory over the Burlington Bees Monday night with a 9-8 loss in 10 innings, their first loss to Burlington since April 7. The loss drops the Chiefs to 7-4 in the second half and 46-35 overall.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead against starter Mitch Traver. Nick Plummer led off with a double to center and moved to third with two outs. After Yariel Gonzalez drew a walk, Julio Rodriguez put the Chiefs on top 1-0 with a single to left before Traver got out of the inning.
     Trailing 2-1, the Chiefs used a big inning to regain the lead in the second. Matt Fiedler led off the inning with a long home run to left, his fourth of the season and second against Burlington. With the game tied at two, Jose Martinez walked with one out and Plummer singled to left. Irving Lopez walked to load the bases and Elehuris Montero doubled to left to score two and give the Chiefs a 4-2 lead. Gonzalez singled up the middle to score two more and after a wild pitch, Rodriguez put the Chiefs on top 7-2 with a single to left.
   Burlington got a run against Franyel Casadilla in the third and scored another off reliever Levi MaVorhis in the sixth. The Chiefs answered back in the top of the seventh against Austin Warren. Montero singled to center and moved to second on a wild pitch before Alexis Wilson walked. Rodriguez singled home Montero for an 8-4 Chiefs lead before Warren got out of the inning.
    Fabian Blanco allowed a solo homer in the seventh and gave way to CJ Saylor in the eighth. Burlington loaded the bases on a single, walk and hit batter before scoring two runs on a single from Julio Garcia. Kodi Whitley came out of the bullpen and got a double play to end the inning with the Chiefs up 8-7.
     Burlington tied the game in the ninth on a two-out single from Torii Hunter Jr.. The Chiefs didn't advance the ghost runner in the top of the 10^th and the Bees won the game on a single from Kevin Williams Jr. with one out in the bottom of the inning.
     Casadilla allowed three runs on eight hits over three innings in a no-decision as he walked one and struck out four. MaVorhis allowed one run on three hits over two innings while walking one and striking out one. Blanco picked up his second hold despite allowing a home run. He gave up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out three in one inning. Saylor also got a hold, allowing two runs on two hits, one walk and one hit batter in 1/3 of an inning. Whitley (3-1) took the loss as he allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk while striking out three in two innings.
