Hanley Ramirez Inducted Into Sea Dogs Hall of Fame

Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs in conjunction with Unum have announced that former Sea Dogs shortstop Hanley Ramirez is the 2014 inductee into the Unum Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame. The announcement was made prior to Friday's Sea Dogs game against the Harrisburg Senators.  

"Thank you to the Portland Sea Dogs for the honor," said Ramirez. "I enjoyed my time playing there. Also thank you to the fans for your support."

Ramirez appeared in 154 games over parts of two seasons with the Sea Dogs in 2004 and 2005. He compiled a .279 average with 28 doubles, nine triples, 11 home runs, 67 RBI, 92 runs, and 38 stolen bases.

The Red Sox top prospect according to Baseball America in 2003, 2004 and 2005, Ramirez arrived in Portland on August 1, 2004 after receiving a promotion from High-A Sarasota. The highly touted prospect did not disappoint hitting .310 (40-for-129) in 32 games with seven doubles, five home runs, and 15 RBI with the Sea Dogs.

Ramirez would return to Portland for the 2005 season, where he produced a .271 average with 21 doubles, seven triples, six home runs, 52 RBI, 66 runs, and 26 stolen bases in 122 games helping the Sea Dogs claim the Eastern League Northern Division title. He was selected to both the mid and post-season Eastern League All-Star teams. He was also selected to participate in the MLB All-Star Futures Game.  

After the Sea Dogs 2005 post-season run, Ramirez received a big league call-up to the Red Sox and made his Major League debut on September 20, 2005. Ramirez appeared in two games for the Red Sox where he went a combined 0-for-2.

In the off-season, Ramirez was traded to the Florida Marlins in the deal that sent Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell to the Red Sox.

Ramirez spent the 2006 season with the Marlins and was selected as the 2006 National League Rookie of the Year after hitting .292 with 46 doubles, 17 home runs, 59 RBI, and 51 stolen bases in 158 games. He hit .342 in 2009 to claim the National League batting title. Ramirez is a two-time Silver Slugger award winner (2008, 2009) and a three-time National League All-Star (2008-2010).

On July 25, 2012, Ramirez was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers along with Randy Choate for Nathan Eovaldi and minor league pitching prospect Scott McGough.

In 1,198 big league games, Ramirez has produced a .298 career average with 190 home runs.

The Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame was established in 2005. Ramirez joins Josh Beckett, John Boles, Dan Burke, Bob Ganley, Adrian Gonzalez, Fredi Gonzalez, Livan Hernandez, Charles Johnson, Mark Kotsay, Kevin Millar, Mike Redmond, Edgar Renteria, Bill Troubh, Carlos Tosca, and Kevin Youkilis as members of the Unum Portland Sea Dogs Hall of Fame.

To be eligible for the Hall of Fame, players must have debuted with the Sea Dogs at least ten years ago and had success in Portland and beyond. Each inductee is presented a plaque for their accomplishment. In addition, plaques of the Hall of Fame members are displayed in the Hadlock Field concourse. The Sea Dogs' 2014 campaign concludes on Monday, September 1st at 1:00 PM. Eastern League playoffs kick-off on Wednesday, September 3rd.
